    Hi all,
Sometime, I encountered fish that is too sick or seriously infected by disease or fungus and is beyond cure. Instead of watching them to die suffering, I wish to know if there is any way of "putting them to sleep"? My friend told me that the best way is to wrap the fish up with wet cloth and put them into the freezer. However, I don't think that my wife will tolerate seeing a dead sick fish in the freezer.

... on the other hand, since we are not fish, how would we know that the fish will not feel pain with the method ... Hmm...

    Regards,

hold a pillow over the gills, press hard until it stopped struggling.

Then I must start to make a tiny pillow filled up with filter wool.

The fastest death is the least painful and suffering. Squash it under a mallet or hammer. I can't do that...

Just put in in a cup of water and freeze it.
    I'm back!

    blender.

no actually the fastest way would be.

    a) slice the head off with a razor/cutter

    b) smash it between a brick.

for corydoras or other fish with a strong skeleton. use the freezing method

Gee, the method suggested by louparagou is by far the most atrocious. That's a job for the headhunters in the deepest jungles of Borneo.
I would simply suffocate them in the air. It's hassle-free.

    Duh.

We're looking for a method which is most pain-free for the fish, not for the fish killer.

Smashing the fish with a brick or slicing the head off would be the fastest and least painful for the fish, and is in fact recommend in several fish reference books mrs budak has read.

Unless that you are willing to eat them. I will serve them hot for you.

How can one be so sure that fish feels no pain w the slicing/ crashing the head method? My believe is that the fish suffers tremendous excruciating pain even if it’s only for a split second.

It doesn’t matter to me what the most reputable textbook says. Shouldn’t the saying “Do not unto others what you don’t want others do unto you” also apply in this case??

If “pain-free” is the single most important criterion, then suffocation in the air is the way to go. There is no pain involved, only some discomfort but if you’re talking abt fish that’s living on borrowed time, it takes just a few furhter seconds to complete the job. But if you are truly an ethical hobbyist w strong convictions, then the best way is to first anaesthetize the fish and then bring it to the surface.

    Oh, such an emotive response!

Pain=nerve. Cut nerve=no pain. Smash brain=destroy nerve centre.

Sorry, I do not want to be suffocated. Therefore, I do not suffocate the fish. Are you a relativist?

But I agree with you that anasthesia is a better way to euthanise.

how about putting the fellow in a blender and turning the power on??

This method has been established by an European court as a humane (instant demise) way of killing the fish.... after animal rights groups tried to sue an avant-garde artist for setting up such a blender at an exhibition.

Ooer.. i dont really suggest the brick method. Your fish, being slippery, might just "slip away" fom the brick, giving it only one helluva PAINFUL concussion, but not instant death. Once had a silver dollar near death, my mom tried giving it the brick, so she wrapped it up in cloth n *splat* When she removed the cloth she realised the body was smashed but the fish still gasping. She wouldnt dare touch it anymore n i had to rewrap it and *ugh* hold it while i pulverised it . Not a pretty sight. Or experience*shudder*.
Do the fish a favor n drop it in a bucket of ice w water. Least painful that way.

How about just throwing it out of the window?

    Hi,

Read it somewhere that the best euthanesia method for fish is to place the fish in a plastic bag, and put it into a freezer. Its something like boiling water with a frog in it...

    Hope this helps..
