Usually, all other lights are off, like what Simon says (no pun intended).
Looking from your album, your tank picture is fine. No reflection from external sources. Take note of the overexposed portion on the top from the leaves at the water surface. You can use a graduated Neutral Density filter to resolve that issue. You need to buy the filter and a add on adaptor to your camera.
And, work on your color balance. All your pictures seem greenish, probably due to the plant lights (6000 to 8000K) you are using. You can easily correct that in photoshop or add a blue filter (82a, b, or c).
If you would like to link your photos here for assistance/critique, you can try free webhost such as www.photobucket.com or www.instantlogic.com.
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

for point and shoot digicam, what I did was cover the lights so, your camera wouldn't meter the lights and adjust, causing underexposed. But it can be edited using Photoshop. I usually use the auto mode and shoot.
oic! so P9 dun have the ability to change its focal length and shutter speed manually

the digicam these days should have some manual functions.. for focal length, will be your optical zoom, for shutter speed settings, u need to refer to your manual
