Recently I've noticed some form of algae on my java moss. It's dark coloured and wispy. It has a stringy texture and looks like hair.

May I know some of the ways to get rid of this hair algae? Do Yamato shrimps eat this?

    Thanks in advance.

Yamato shrimp do eat black beard algae but it will be the last resort as i think BBA are not really palatable to them. All other food source have to clean out first. How about spot nuking with hydrogen peroxide 3%? There is a recent thread about the method recently.

Is hydrogen peroxide safe for moss? I once spot-dosed Seachem Excel when green filamentous infested my moss. Killed patches of my moss too. Resorted to dropping 10 yamatos and algae were miraculously gone the next day.

Never heard excel killing moss before. Hydrogen peroxide is bleach so caution have to exercise.

Full tank treatment using Excel generally fine. Spot dosing onto the moss will kill it.

So the idea would be to dose excel normally via the water column and this will help control the BBA? I did try to use a brush to scrape it off but it's stuck to my moss.

    Algae on moss

Dosing higher then required by abit is ok. Excel after 1-2 days will dissipate.

    Learn something new! Thanks

Do you happen to know why? From what I understand excel is just liquid carbon. Did not know it has destructive capability.

It is known to contain glutaraldehyde, which is toxic to algae, http://www.aquariumslife.com/feature...lourish-excel/

Toxic to humans as well, I'd wear gloves and be really careful when handling this stuff.

Yah, that's why it comes in bottles with child-safe caps.
