I'm camping here. This is an interesting experiment.
Even with the cabinets custom made specifically for fish tanks, blistering and warping after sometime in use due to spillage during water changes, so it will be interesting to see how this works out for you.

    Re: 2013 New Project

The metal racks are just held up by the 4 bolts at each corner right? Isn't all the weight resting on the bolts that hold the metal bars in place?

I am using an IKEA expedit shelf just like the one the TS is using. I've also laid it down in the exact same manner and have a 1.5ft tank on it with no additional supporting struts. Have no issues with water seep or bowing thus far.

    How long already bro?

    And yes you are right.
Bolt quality matters. And depends on the rack design. Most have 8 actually.

My tank has been running for a few months now. Prior to the expedit, it was on an IKEA lack side table.

    Re: 2013 New Project

    Hi All Members,

I'm sure many of you is waiting for my stress test result. hehe...

Added 220 lbs (100kg) of weights from my gym and my 3 teenage kids (60kg +45kg + 44kg) Total of 269kg. And the result is.............

The Ikea Expedit is still alive and strong!!!

But I decided to add another 15" X 59" and 0.8 thick plywood on the top surface to spread the 210kg weight. I draw a diagram to share with everyone. Click to enlarge diagram below:

    diagram 2.jpg

I totally agreed with All the members here. The Ikea Particleboard CAN'T hold if water sit on it for long. With particleboard, you only have a problem if the water stays on it for long periods. So just don't let water sit on it for long or make sure NO water spill at all. I always wipe away any water on the surface never leave water there for more than 10 sec.

How long we going to keep the tank or Ikea Expedit bookshelf? two years or three years? I'm sure most of the members here will upgrade or give up the hobby less than three years. (include me hehe...)
I'm sure very small group very professional and die hard senior member will continues... Wish I will be one of them in the future too

Thank you all the concerns and suggestions. I'm just love to R&D and find problem to fix. if not life will be very boring.
I'm going ahead with the plan above. will update all the scape later and ask for advise on plants (Since I don't know 95% of the name)

Good luck bro, maybe to be more extreme, you can fix a couple of strain gauges to see the stress distribution and reinforce those that are weaker? Constantly monitor the value from Ye strain gauges and you'll know that it's going to give way when the values differ by more than usual.. R&D.. All the best!

    Re: 2013 New Project

hmmm..glad I came across this...I was planning to put my new 2ft tank onto the 2x2 expedia...now it seems I need to look for alternatives

dont like the metal stands cos the bottom bits are exposed when I put the equipment etc (was planning to cover up the expedia bottom half), but it seems like this is better than using cabinets? any recommendation on places to buy well designed cabinets for this?

    HI Limyw,

If is only for 2' tank. 100% safe without any support. my 2' ft tank on expedit for over 20 months. 0 problem.

    Re: 2013 New Project

Chipboard(IKEA) - When they are dry they can withstand most of the weights stated, no issue, problems comes from moisture(when the tank is bigger it tends to have more moisture) or if you do scaping(trimming plants/ changing water/ fish splash etc) often like me, then it is a bad idea, as chipboard tends to absorb water and expand fast, strength weakens tremendously. Chipboard after sometime tends to warp alot than other woods, the resistance is not there due to hollow supporting especially when you have big tank.
    .
Plywood - can withstand better when water sips in, moisture etc, better for aquarium stand.
    .
    Just my 0.002cts opinion.

just Books in the Expedit shelving

    No plywood on the surface.
To play safe. you just need to lay a rubber mat on the top surface, before you put your tank.
Ikea particleboard, you only have a problem if the water stays on it for long periods. So wipe away the water, if you spill.

Sorry. Normally 2' tank will weight around 70kg. with the wheel is 100% NO NO. All the weight will be focus on the 4 contact point. And with the wheel, the chances to spill water will be X 10.
