    Had a silly question here.

I made my own DIY CO2 generator using Yeast and sugar.
Realised that it is really very pungent and smelly.

The question is .. Though I know it benefits the plants alot,
    does it affect the fish?

The CO2 does not affect your fish. However too much CO2 will poison the fishes. But normally DIY CO2 is not enuf to poison the fishes even if you're supplying it 24/7. If you see the fish gasping for air at the water surface prolly means CO2 poisoning.
    Cheers!!

    thanks for the advise!

At least I can rest my mind in peace.

I was worried that the DIY CO2 generator had other by-products other than CO2 that will dissolved into the water.

Just make sure you got a check valve so that only the Co2 generated in your bottles go into the tank

If you got rotting/ sh*tty smell, you have bacteria contamination. Try to keep everything (bottles, hands, spoon) clean.

smelly? when i did it (before my presurized setup) i thought it smelled _exactly_ like beer... so much so i even contimplated chugging some, although that would lead to some nasty side effects i'm sure! not to mention it _probably_ wouldn't taste that good!

so what do you connect to on the end of the tube... a air head( which make tiny little bubbles) where you put it - all the way to the tankbed, near the top of the water line or middle???

Where can you get the yeast from??? is it in powder form??? how many tank do you normaly need?
    thanks

You mean the airstone... if you are using the airstone, you must place it right at the bottom of the tank so that the bubbles have a change to dissolve in the water... but since it is DIY CO2, you can't really control the output of the CO2 and therefore cannot control the size of the bubbles release....
    ( lots of CO2 wastage )

You might want to get a CO2 reactor to help mix the CO2 with water more efficiently ( goto the equipment section and look for this topic called "UP reactor questions" ).

As for the yeast, most NTUC or any neighbourhood shops should have it.. I got the Baker's Yeast... $1 to $2, will last you very long time...

1 CO2 bottles should last like 2 weeks if you have the correct mixture...
    unless you shake it everyday...

No lah, it should last about 4 weeks... It all depends on how you much yeast you add. More yeast = faster fermentation, more CO2, shorter lifespan. Yes, its very troublesome. The production will not be constant...
Make sure no leaks, cos every bit of CO2 from DIY is precious. Check by stopper the ends with your fingers, put the whole bottle down into water, and squeeze the bottle. If leak, you will see bubbles. Alternatively, you can use soap solution lah, but I find it very messy.

    Hi Joestoys,

I connect the end of the tube to a CO2 diffuser. But realised that my yeast generator produce lots of CO2 for the first few days. After that, only a little is produced. Those docs that teaches you how to make your own CO2 says that it will last approx 2 weeks... errr ... wondering ....
