    Currently housing my fishes n plants in a 2.5 ft tank while i scape my new tank. Been up for ard 3-4 weeks, now seeing h20 looks brownish. Check 4 ammonia but dun seem to be any prob, temp ard 29, water change every 2 weeks. lights:60watt, but tubes been ard 1.5yrs old...
    fauna:1 angel, 1 "upsidedown catfish", 1 sae, 40 young neons, a few other assorted fish(dunno what they r).
    flora: 3 sword plant, 1 patch pilulari(?), 1 anubias, 1 bunch mayaca, 1 fast growing broad leaf plant. most plants potted with gravel. lower plart of plant growin some brown algae, top part green n healthy.
    Plants dun seem healthy, n water is brown. friend commented it looked like brackish water. Whats wrong? too much nitrates? dont got ph testing kit too, sorry. how 2 remedy? go for h20 change? im gonna intro some crypts in so i dun wanna make too much changes...

    If you have a driftwood in your tank, it is most likely from the driftwood.
    It is the tanins from the wood leaching into the water.

    Normally, we soak the driftwood in boiling water before introducing into the tank to prevent this.

    dont think its the driftwood... its mature... been immersed at least 4 yrs... Does nitrates turn the water brown? or is it colourless?

    Nitrates should not cause the brown colouring.

    Did you treat the wood in bleach recently? What do you add to your tank?

    The brown colouring are suspended particles or water being stained brown like tea?
