Re: Rainbow Fishes you have kept

Here it goes, I've only kept two species of rainbows; Melanotaenia boesemani and Pseudomugil gertrudae and I think they are prolific fishes. I'm not a rainbow fish fanatic but would definitely have a hard time leaving any LFS empty-handed if I ever come across Pseudomugil tenellus or cyanodorsalis and I'm glad it didn't happen, fingers crossed...

One of the posts mentions that the "Blue Neon" behaves differently from the "Red Neon". They're probably the same species just 2 different forms, or one is a cross with a gertrudae variant.
Either way, since the Red Neon has been determined to be a different species altogether, perhaps they'll make a mention of the "Blue Neon" in any future descriptions.

I want to get the gertrudae. Hope to breed them as well. Has anyone seen them recently in Singapore?

As I stay near nanyang seaview, I bought them there. I also prefer young fish so I can watch them grow and they carry a nice range of juveniles and adults. But I have seen them sold at other places too such as Green Chapter and Otf at pasir ris

Hi bro. I got my Pseudomugil Gertrudaes from green chapter but their stock of this species gets snapped up really quickly. I myself only got my hands on a pair.

Don't be mistaken by their initial looks at the store cos after having them in my tank for 2 weeks, their beauty is really starting to show, and quite a dramatic improvement too.

I'm sure that they get snapped up quickly. Anyone seen them in LFS recently? Oh, how much does one gertrudae cost?

    No problem.

Yup seaview is the one at Jalan kayu

Just note that the seaview reply was done with regards to Iriatherina Werneri and not Pseudomugil Gertrudae, cos I don't remember seeing any Gertrudaes there, if I'm not wrong

Thanks for your reply. I managed to find some Iriatherina Werneri at lfs yesterday. Interesting that seaview also has the juvenile species. What do you feed them? they don't seem to be interested in the fish food even though it is very fine form.

Actually I'm just giving them a mixture of flakes and dry food. Occasionally some frozen daphnia. Their Finnage growth is really exciting to monitor, pretty dramatic with strong black and orange

Brine shrimp flakes and hikari's fancy guppy tiny pellets are what I use as their main food. Maybe they need some time to settle in as they can be quite shy at first.

Re: Rainbow Fishes you have kept

Hey guys I just wanted to add a few to my list,

    Melanotaenia catherinae
    Melanotaenia sexlineata
    Melanotaenia praecox

I got lucky and found a very nice local breeder. So far it seems like there are a lot of amazing strains in America. I am searching for blue eyes and it seems like its pretty good here. I should be able to expand my collection soon.

But the Rhadinocentrus, I found someone local who use to have it. But man that's gonna be the hardest to find here.

BTW out of curiosity, do you guys feed your rainbowfish fruit flies? I want to try a culture since my live food cultures never seem to produce enough food. I had it before but my apistos never ate it only my vampire crabs. So it was a waste.

    You got lucky alright.

I reckon you have a better selection over in the States as compared to us here, especially since you guys got specialist breeders who simply love these niche groups. Ronwill aka Ronnie, told me that in our climate, those wingless fruit flies will start to form wings again. I only tried them once, my fish never liked them.

I am lucky again, I just got some pseudomugil tenellus Man they are pretty.

Hahaha but there will always be rainbowfishes I can never get. If only I was in Australia lol.

You guys have some of the best importers in your surrounding countries so there are sooo many more things you guys can get that I will never see. I'm really envious.

About the fruit fly, I didn't know there were some that revert back at high temperatures. I use to work in a bio lab and I know for sure wingless cannot revert back. So if you can, get those. As a bonus, because of your nice climate, they will reproduce very quickly. So I can just imagine the boat loads of fruit flies you can get.

I'm about to get some fruit flies and try feeding them to my rainbowfish. I really hope they take it. Fruit flies are the most productive culture I had ever tried so I really hope my fishes will eat them.

Okay now you're making me jealous . Pseudomugil tenellus is beautiful. You should try looking for this species - Pseudomugil mellis. I haven't seen any new imports lately, but rainbows are not on my wish list at the moment so I might have overlooked any recent shipments.
