Yeah it has been used by quote a few people already and so far, as far as bioload goes, they seem to agree... Still there could be mistakes in DB so I am looking for some feedback if anyone finds problems.

Compatibility on the other hand, is a lot of work!
in my 29 gallon tank it said i was 23 percent stocked when i had only 2 1 inch fish. somethins up?

This one needs a bit of understanding on how AqAdvisor.com works. % is based on the % of tank needed for those species to live. You will find that by doubling those species, % will not jump to 46% - it will be less than that. It really is more meaningful when your % is closer to 100% than 20%.

In simple terms, say 10 neons need 10g tank doesn't mean 1 neon can live in 1g tank...

I wouldn't worry about water being foggy right now. Are you currently cycling the tank?

As for your filter, I would say it will be ok for a while but once you load up your tank and your species grow up, it won't be sufficient. You can either upgrade it or add another filter.

Re: New stocking calculator with a difference!

Thanks, yhbae, for this most useful tool.

As I read thru more of this thread, I'm reminded of similar types of problems in the Expert Systems days (yes, I'm an old hand at this).

Expert Systems are a collection of rules, that given certain inputs, recommended certain actions. The one of biggest hinderances to successful deployment Expert Systems was a system's explanation for why it recommended/concluded certain things. User's didn't want to just take the system at it's word. (I guess this is a good thing!)

A couple approaches help: (1) build an explanation system so that the rationale of the conclusion is clearly explained, and/or (2) just be very transparent about how you get to your conclusion (this means exposing internal metrics that might not make sense outside the system. (2) is easier to do, but if you have too many "magic numbers" in your system, then the transparency might still be difficult to understand. Best if these "magic numbers" can be translated to English.

Comments in this thread containing points like "I have two 1-inch fish and the system tells me I'm 23% stocked" are due to the fact that it is not clear to the user why the recommendation was given.

I guess this is my long-winded way of suggesting that if you want this utility to be an even more successful utility; think about how you would architect the system to be transparent about it's recommendations.

Again, yhbae, thanks for the work you're doing for the community.

You are right, although I have not worked on expert system much, I did get into it only a bit when I was studying in a university before.

The app does feature many numbers that were quantified from qualities that are usually not quantifiable. Most of the users won't be able to get much meaning from these numbers unless they understand the deeper understanding of the app which I don't expect them to do. On the other hand, it is possible to provide more descriptive text without extending the current architecture of the app. It does make sense.

In some cases, I've provided the links "What's this" to clarify things a bit, but it is apparent that not everyone reads them... Oh well, that means I do need to make the app more intuitive.

I guess this is my long-winded way of suggesting that if you want this utility to be an even more successful utility; think about how you would architect the system to be transparent about it's recommendations.

Again, yhbae, thanks for the work you're doing for the community.
Thanks for your suggestions - will definitely think about this as I expand this app.

    Feedback.

The conditional loops were amazing. The warnings shown are accurate; my test subjects were cardinals and gourami, and it directly show up gourami as the more aggressive fish. Likewise when I added Bettas into the test. Not bad. Keep it up!

Re: New stocking calculator with a difference!

Actually I was just probing around before I got sick this week. So far so good, no weakness found yet. Although like the rest said, the submission portion could be made better. See if the suggestions are good or not:

    1. Combined the two submission button into 1 (aka Update).
    2. 1st procedure running no change, except it is rap within a If-endif loop for check on filter 1 and filter 2. Detection for AquListBoxFilter="" and AquTextFilterRate="N/A" and AquListBoxFilter2="" and AquTextFilterRate="N/A". Meaning the 2nd loop will run if AquListBoxFilter="" OR AquTextFilterRate="N/A" OR AquListBoxFilter2="" OR AquTextFilterRate="N/A".
    3. Instead of gUS, put USg

Do only when free as you don't want to do it hastily and risk messing the codes, and do your backups as usual as frequently before programming. =) Let me know if you don't know what I am typing now.

Does it cause confusion? They are basically the same - you can press either buttons and will result in the same action.

    Confused.. lol

This might make sense. Some people were asking me what gUS meant. I think the best is to say "US Gal" but I wanted to keep them short...

Oh trust me, I have enough backups, properly source controlled and backed up in 3 different locations.

Oh, I see. You already made the changes. ^__^ How about remove a button. You could move Filter 2 downwards to the next TR which will free you space for both to be written as US Gallons

Good habit there. ^_^" I guess you have one at home, one on thumbdrive/ext. hdd, one at office. Normal lah.

Search String there also can have a pull down from A-Z, 0-9 where you can search E.g. A*. Which will reduce the list. The troublesome thing is to repost all the values as hidden and make sure they get submitted through.

In the near future, I am going to look into revamping the GUI. The current GUI (I think) got evolved too far. It started off as a very simple GUI but I kept adding elements to it and now it is quite cluttered. I never thought I would go this far with this app at that time.

    Filter 1=empty and Filter 2=empty
Filter 1 neq empty OR Filter 2 neq empty (where neq is not equal to)
I understand. So what did you suggest when the above conditions are true?

Good habit there. ^_^" I guess you have one at home, one on thumbdrive/ext. hdd, one at office. Normal lah.
Actually one on my dev PC, one on my thumb drive, one on my laptop.
I actually make another copy occasionally on my Android phone if you can count that...

Search String there also can have a pull down from A-Z, 0-9 where you can search E.g. A*. Which will reduce the list. The troublesome thing is to repost all the values as hidden and make sure they get submitted through.
I think what you are really asking for is two types of searches - substring search (which I have already) and "search starting with this string". That could be interesting.

=) I understand, it gets messy at time. I made the same mistakes last time also. When 1st time using your calculator, I study the interface for 5mins and know how the logic flow.

Empty one runs the loop above the filter 1 and 2.
Not empty one runs the loop for filter 1 and 2.

Ha ha...thought you would be patience enough for Nexus One (N1).

Actually, if you ask me to do programming now, it would be Input Text Box [Search] [New] 2 buttons. Upon searching the result, I will do hyperlink to each of the master columns and a check box for deletion behind. The hyperlink will allow users to edit if they are authenticated to have the rights to modify records. In some cases, after the search string line, there will be a drop down for filtering purposes (auto submit onselect action).

Got my Rogers Magic more than 6 months ago, and flashed it with hacked HTC Sense ROM. It works identical to HTC Hero and it's pretty nice. But you are right, my next cell will likey be a Nexus One or something similar to that.

Something that can rival iphone, actually it would look more like N1 is the latest hence iphone cannot catch up until the next iphone comes out. I would be surprised if you were not tempted.

    N1 vs Iphone:
    1GHZ vs 600MHZ
    800x480 (2x of iphone)
    5MP vs 3MP
Twin mics for active noise cancellation
    Default mail: Google mail (expected)
slower emails transfer vs iphone but with 3G, not noticeable.
less apps. vs iphone tons of apps.

If I continue I think you will just rush out and find where is the outlet that sells N1.
