    Hi guys,

Just came across this special shrimp that is suppose to be the grandfather of the crystal red. It has a red tail and it's almost like a bee shrimp, but more irregular in markings with both white and black banding across the brownish body. Very pretty.

Was told that it's call diamond shrimp or something like that. Seem to be found only in Hong Kong. Was just wondering if it's worth S$15 for each wild caught speciment. So tempting.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

I have seen a tank of shrimps labeled as "diamond shrimps" at Biotope a couple of weeks back. Not so expensive like the CRS.

the ones in biotope are not diamond shrimps. The last I saw, they are selling for $1.50 and looked like bees to me.

Hmm.. it does look like the one that Choy posted, except that it's like black brown and white, with red tail markings. Perhaps I will get some back from Hong Kong.

Thanks for the comments guys! Appreciate it.

    Cheers,

Wild caught Diamond is very cheap in HK, definately cheaper than S$15. I suspect you are getting bred and refined diamond shrimp, that's why it S$15.

The pattern of diamond shrimps varies quite a bit especially near the center part of the body, those wild caught one has tea brown tail with 4 white dots and those high grade bred one has dark brown tail with 4 white dots. Nowsaday, one can even get bred/refined diamond with large patch of white on tail.

Heard from friends in HK, a shop in HK is selling very nice bee shrimp (look like high grade diamond from far with wide and thick white bands) as forefather of CRS and the price even exceed wild caught diamond. Can't wait to get hold off this type bee shrimps.

Hope to see the pictures soon.

Well.. Had a word with Choy and it seems that the ID of these shrimps are not easy to determine. As it is, there are hundred of species within the two popular genus, Caridina and Neocaridina.

In any case, manage to get some pictures and here's one of them..

From the second picture, you can see that they have mini claws that has fine bristles on them. Aren't they cute and pretty?

There's more later when I have the time. It seems that under intense lighting, some interesting coloration/pigmentation shows up.

Can eleborate further? Too bright? Muddy color? My 19" Viewsonic is on the blitz again. I think I'm going to have to swap it out this week end.

Here's another frontal shot. Can't seem to get the mouth. He's not very co-operative.

I think you will need to manually focus in order to get the AF on the mouth part.

Oh.. That's because I shot the shrimps without any focusing light. He was wondering if there is any difference in the coloration of the shrimps under dim conditions. Pencil fishes, for example, has different markings when shot in the night without any other ambient light source.

However, on the monitor at home, colors looks bright and punchy with any color adjustments. Does not seem to be the case for you. Is the exposure over or under? Perhaps my monitor is too dark or the setting is off. Anyway, I will replace and re-calibrate the monitor and see how it goes.

AF does not work in dim lighting anyway. Besides, these fellas are no more co-operative than loaches. They are all over the place.

mmm… I meant dtzy's monitor must have been too dark. your exposure seems fine, just the brightness adjustment a bit low, especially compared with your latest closeup.

How big is the shrimp tank? Temperature? CO2? Filtration? Thinking of setting one up in office and now thinking about lighting, temperature, filtration and CO2 requirements for shrimps and the plants needed...
