Hi, anyone care to help me on this? I bought 2 pieces of wood from 2 different LFS few months ago. After keeping it for few months under the water, both are sinking now but one is like getting rotten. When I scrub on this piece, I'll get something like mud coming out. It also breaks into small pieces, which make the water dirty (initially, it releases tannins but has stopped). I also noticed some soft substance like algae forming on the surface. The other piece is perfectly fine without any of these problems. Both are on the same tank (where I store aged water) & is not exposed to sunlight.

Did I get the wrong wood or did I not treating it correctly ? How do I tell whether a wood is suitable for planted tank or not?
    Cheers,
    U.K.Lau

If possible you can maybe take a photo of it? Anyways, momentarily, bogwood is of a lighter coloration and takes almost forever to sink (read: 2 weeks or more). Driftwood normally heavier and darker in color (I believe its the one where you scrub and find the "mud" coming out of it.)

Thanks Greyfox. The tank where the wood is soaked is in the store. I'll see if I can make it bright enough to take a photo of it.

I just couldn't get enough light to capture a clear picture of what I'm having. Thus, I spend some time scrubing the wood again. Hope it will not turn bad again.

BTW, anyone else would like to share your experience on the subject matter? Thanks.

Hmm... so the difference is that bogwood looks to be the root system of softwood trees. Whereas driftwood is any part of a hardwood tree

soo... just a question.. which of these 2 types of wood actually leech tannins? I read tannins are good for angelfish, so i am planning to add some aquarium wood that produces tannins.
