How do I reduce my tapwater pH from above 7.4 to 6.5 before adding into my tank. My tank water pH is 6.2 and I find I get a PH shock for my shrimps and many die. I understand pH down solution are not ideal, so what other method can I do? I have tried blackwater essence, does not seem to work well.

Buy Peat from your local LFS and put it in your (spare) filter chamber. Run the filter for a day or two in a bucket/spare tank/container and check the PH....that should do the trick.

Maybe you could consider buying bottled distilled water for water change (provided you tank is small). My 1 feet tank is filled 100% with distilled water (with GEX substrate) and I have recently added tiger shrimps and CRS (grade B) directly into the tank without acclimatization without any issues (not that I am encouraging people to do this) .

Alternatively, like what the rest of the bro advise above, soak something in the water (ketapang leaves, peat moss, etc) to lower the pH before using the water for water change.

Distilled water in the long run isn't good for your tank. It lacks of minerals and your kh and gh will be very low.

There's no problem with water change from ph 7.4
You just need to do 20% water change weekly and do it slowly when adding in the new water. I guess your shrimps won't die of ph shock la. Btw how big is your tank ?

tank is a 2X2X1 feet tank, use aquaclay as the soil base, I have no idea how the pH can reduce to such low levels on its own. I add a few drops of black water essence each water change and I have 2 ADA driftwood, but 6.2 is really ridiculously low when your water exceed 7.4. I have also have alot of green hair algae growing, which is even most confusing, because I thought they flourish under high pH and not low pH. So either my pH kit is faulty or I am totally missing something here.
