A simple way of describing your tank is simply nice![]()
Hi all,
This is my first attempt at an aquascape and the tank was initially a impulse buy to let my son keep a few fishes but quickly became my tank.
It's a 4 week old IQ3 tank by Dymax I bought at Aquarama 2009 with internal overflow and LED lights. I replaced the sponge media with Eheim Substrat Pro. It is a high-tech setup with CO2 injection, 23w CFL and TEM Chiller.
The scape does not require much imagination - I wanted with a flat lawn and grass-like plants behind a corner stone with plenty of space - something familiar to our surroundings in Singapore (e.g. HDB grass patches.).

very simple and nice , first attempt?? Impressive![]()
nice HC.. may i know what tem chiller are you using?
Thanks for the encouragement! Despite the small size, it's very soothing to watch.
I am using the Dophin MC-788, single fan TEM chiller.
It usually hovers around 27-28 degC despite it being such a small tank. Room temp of 30-31 degC.
As the modified hoses (10mm diameter) carrying the water are very thin to accomodate my tiny internal overflow pump, a lot of heat is absorbed on the way back to the tank. I am thinking of getting insulation hoses for this.
The lowest I have ever gotten was 25.5 degC after a stormy night recently.
Maybe you could try wrapping the hoses in cloth to reduce heat gain?
simple nice. i like it.
Well, your plant seems to be growing well.![]()
hi alvin ..... thats a very nice setup indeed.....

Hi alvin,
Nice tank!
i am a newbie... I bought the IQ3 too. But I have no time to do up the tank yet.
Anyway, may I know why u change to a 23w CFL? I thought the IQ3 package came with a dymax LED lighting unit? Is it not a good lighting unit?
Yeap, it came with the Dymax LED lights which I still like very much due to it's compact form.
I am using the 23w CFL (or FL) household lights now because there was a period of melting for my foreground plants (HC). I may switch back to 2 LED lamps in due time when the foreground forms a thicker carpet.
Amazing mini grass scene indeed...interesting![]()
It began with DIY bottle pumped through a ceremic glass diffusor. It was later changed to a pressurized CO2 cylinder at 1 to 1.5bps (manual regulator).
The change of lights made the biggest difference to the sustainability of the HC - but there is also increased green spot algae noticed on the tank surface.
Update: 1.5 months
These tank shots are taken with the LED lights temporarily.
HC is still growing, but the leaves are a little duller - traces of green spot algae (I think) can be seen on the leaves in green/brown shades and this makes them much less vibrant.
The Dwarf Sag runners have to be uprooted and trimmed - about 3-4 runners/week?

I dont know what is a manual regulator is.
Here are my two U.S. Made regulators that I will be using soon.
The one on the right is a Brand New Concoa I bought in Ebay for just US$9.99 with $14.00 shipping. A retail would cost over $200 my guess.Maybe way up more. The other is Victor CO2 Regulator.

Hey Alvin,
Nice shot.
By the way, are you concern with Acrylics?
I heard they will get scratches sooner or later rite.
If Dymax made a glass tank for this, wouldn't it be better ?
There are 1 or 2 very mild scratches on the exterior due to my kids who love to 'touch' (mildly put) the surface but not really visible.I don't think I will bother to polish them out.
I guess the common pros of acrylic are that they are very clear without any hints of tints, and the weight is really low and it feels sturdy. I would not mind either way (glass/acrylic) honestly. If the size I am going for is larger - 2 feet or greater, I would prefer glass for its better scratch resistance.
veri nice setup bro... looking for the IQ3 too but dunno where is selling??![]()
Strangely, it seems like quite a lot of people are looking for it. I bought it during Aquarama 2009 and I remembered there were a lot of them for sale. I am surprised you do not see them at the local fish stores - maybe they are temporarily out of stock. Best to check with the local distributor for Dymax.
