    Hi all,

Using DSM, I attached some mini fissident to a driftwood a few months back. Recently.. some portion of the mini fissident seems to detach from the wood. May u know what is the possible reason??

Since I am on the topic of mini fissident, may I ask what is the ideal conditions for it to grow well? I read in cooler water, with co2 helps.

Say i do not meet the 2 conditions... can it still at least survive?

Most likely some patches of the mini fissiden didn't grip as well on the wood, so they probably became abit loose when the plant mass got larger.

Usually when i tie fissidens on wood, i'll use a pen knife and score random lines on the wood surface to create more crevices for them to grip on to. That seems to help quite abit.

Even in lush thick fissiden mats, bits of excess fissidens will still sometimes detach on their own and float around the tank... usually attaching to other rocks, wood or even filter mesh intakes and then continue growing from there, i guess its like their natural way of spreading further.

Both fissidens and mini fissidens can grow in common local tank temperatures of 27-29°C (some chaps even grow them in 30-31°C temperatures too), they are very adaptable moss. Co2 helps but its not required for them to grow either (their Co2 intake is very low anyways).

Thanks for your reply! Interesting to know mini fissident don't detach well to smooth wood. If that's the case, can I sand-paper the wood before tying them? Will it work better?

shouldn't it the rougher the wood the easier it is to root to it?

I guess you could try to roughen the smooth wood surface with sand paper too, just have to use those very coarse git sand paper, so that it creates grooves and scratches on the wood.

unlike us fissiden, I found mini fissiden not really attached it self to anything but I do not know in their emerge form, never try it emerge.

If I'm not wrong, fellow hobbyist James Neo who creates beautiful pieces of wood with lush mini fissidens actually mentioned in his sale thread that mini fissidens are easier to attach to wood, rocks etc compared to us fissidens. I have recently experimented with DSM of us fissidens on lava rocks (very rough surfaces so don't see a reason for the moss to not cling and attach well). The end result after at least 2 months of dry start when the lava rocks were soaked in water had significant pieces of fissidens detaching and floating on the surface. I'm going to try the same method but with mini fissidens this time and share the findings.

Do you guys untied your mini fissidens after typing them to wood for a while? Or just leave them tied up? Newbie here, currently soaking my driftwood and I'm planning to attach both US fissiden and mini fissiden to it. Also, good tip on the cutting slits into the driftwood. Thanks!

I usually untie them once they show good growth and root securely into the wood or rocks (ie. they don't detach if i were to pull lightly on them).

You can leave the thread intact without problems too, just that some of it might still be visible (especially with mini fissidens as they are shorter)... though once the fissidens start to grow into a nice dense layer they'll eventually cover most of the thread anyways.

Note that if you use cotton thread, the fissidens will tend to root into the cotton fibers too, so some might detach along with the cotton thread... i use thin fishing line so i don't encounter that issue.

Btw, you could also try making cuts in the wood and then wedge individual fissiden leaves into the slots, its abit more tedious, but then you don't need to tie them.
