Dear all, May I know if there is such thing as we should not get filter which is too powerful for small tank?

Example: Eheim Ecco Pro 3 vs 2ft tank - Too good for the tank?

Yes, a powerful filter will turn a small tank into a washing machine. Although it is good to oversize the filtration for a tank as most of us will overload our tank. But oversize too much may not be too good an idea.

As on how to calculate which filter suitable for your tank. Calculate the amount of water your tank can hold, then get a filter that is able to support the amount of water and up by maybe 30%-50% more.

In planted tank you need flowrate around 8-10 times the water volume. For example your tank is 60x30x24cm = 43 liters. You need about 430 liters per hour flow.

If EHEIM Ecco Pro 3 = EHEIM Ecco Pro 300
The specs shows Pump power (50 Hz) per hour of approx. 750.00 l

my tank will become washing machine!

How big is your tank? You might want to consider ehiem aquacompact 60.

Its OK, if not mistaken it come with valve. You can adjust the valve but make sure adjust only the outlet.

It fits nicely imo, it's a pity that my tank's breath is only 30, if not I could have used the rain bar at the side instead of the back for proper circulation

Actually, I'm using my ecco pro 2236 on a 36cm tank. After filling up with filter media, the flow rate dropped quite a bit. Just direct the outflow through a rainbar across the water surface and it should be no problems :P

    Eh... something like http://www.amazon.com/Installation-4..._petsupplies_2

Oh... I must mention though, my intake and outflow valves are both set to max, my filter is connected to a chiller as well which would reduce the flow rate further

Re: Filter VS size of tank

If you go to East Ocean, they are using 800l per hour canister filter in the 2ft tank.

I bought a China brand canister from them with 800l per hour rating. The box states for 60-90cm aquarium and the shopkeeper said the description is correct.

I'm using it in my 30l 45cm tank at the moment and no issues encountered with the fish. Planned to upgrade to 60cm tank so thought better to buy correct size for 60cm tank. By drilling extra holes into the rainbar, I diffuse the water output so it really doesn't look like a washing machine.

Dont worry too much, you can adjust the valve to make the output flow slower but make sure adjust only the outlet not the inlet
    Trial and error.

Re: Filter VS size of tank

I've have been running a Eheim 2224 (700 l/ph) with lily pipes on a 32litre/45cm tank... in theory, that's more than 21x flow rate. At full blast the fishes and shrimps do get washed around the tank, soil gets kicked up and plants start to get uprooted... exactly like washing machine.

What i do is simply adjust the flow rate lower (until around 50%-60%) on the output side, until its at a manageable flow rate.

Imho, its always good to get a filter with abit more flow rate than you need, then adjust the flow lower via output taps, it allows for more control over the flow conditions in your tank.

Btw, i'm also currently running a Ecco Pro 130 (500 l/ph) on a 64litre/60cm tank, and the flow rate seems just right for it with minimal tap adjustment (though for my case i prefer a more gentle flow with the plants just swaying abit, not flailing about like in a tsunami), so maybe can consider that too.
