there is a limit of what fan can do. Normally maximum it can drop 3 degree, rarely 4 degree.
For example if you have 5cm diameter fan and it can drop 3 degree from ambient temperature, getting 10cm diameter tank will not make it drop further.
Dear fellow aquarists, i have a covered 2ft tank and the temp is hovering between 29-31'C and i'm looking for a fan to cool the water temp to about 27'C. My question is, will a BIG/OVERSIZED fan help cool temperatures lower then a regular square computer fan?
Due to the tank cover, i can only get fans eg http://freshnmarine.com.sg/estore/pr...oducts_id=3930
I have been to Seaview and they only sells the smaller unit. TIA!

Recent studies shows that putting recent studies in your statement have a higher percentage of trust people put into your recent studies. What?
Is this a planted tank? If it is, try not to have a cover as covers trap heat.
If you want to go with fans, it's best not to have a cover as your cooling efficiency drops.
With fan, you have to deal with noise, evaporation and dust getting into water.
If it's s 2ft tank, consider a small chiller.

yes, mine is a planted tank + fish. So far I'm using a very small aquarium fan that blows across the surface which lowers it by 2+'C to about 27.5-28'C. Was wondering if i can drop another degree by changing to a bigger unit or adding another unit. This is when my living aircond is not switched on during the middays.
I don't think i need a chiller. The other day when i forgot to switch off the fan overnight, the water temp dropped to 26'C when i had my aircond running in the living room for 3hours. Promptly found 2 dead tetras the next morning. I have ordered a thermostat on eBay to switch this fan on and off automatically next time.
I doubt your tetra die due to temperature.
It is best not to cover planted tank.Open top planted tanks are more aesthetically pleasing and maintenance is easier. Also more lighting options, equipments are easier to move around the tank and better gas exchange. For your case if you are keeping it covered,it is best to DIY your own fan.![]()
