    Erm..

Not sure how to title it. But lets share how you layer ur cannister or if you use a sub filter etc. How is the process flow like and your concept, type of media. No right or wrong i guess. Whats ur focus for that particular setup etc.

Lets say 2 category for sharing,

    1. Planted cannister setup
    2. Fishes cannoster setup

    Re: Canister layering

For the canister filter arrangement in all my tank setups...

Inflow -> Coarse sponge (For initial mechanical filtration/trap larger debris) -> Seachem Matrix (Biological media) -> Fine White Filter Wool (For fine mechanical filtration/trap tiny debris) -> Purigen (To trap microscopic particles and absorb excess organic compounds) -> Outflow

I guess it pretty much follows the common recommended layout from eheim filter manuals.

    Re: Canister layering

I'm abit (ok, quite a large bit) OCD, so if i have trays for my canister, they will be properly lined up like a honeycomb. I do this to prevent minimal resistance and hopefully will prevent it from being choked as fast. I'm not sure if it actually works, but so far, so good.

I'm mainly doing planted tanks, and i usually opt for Mr Aqua Ceramic Rings, unless i got budget, or manage to get a good deal, then biohomme

Have read through already. But sometimes when we are fast on fingers it slip our mind. And... sms language is pretty a large spectrum of things including vocab grammer etc. Thus when we are wrong sometimes good to point out.

Anyway off topic already. Lets rest it here and allow others to share their canister layering formula ^_^

Mine exactly the opposite, water in coarse sponge, white filter wool, biohome or ceramic ring or anything with large surface area.

    Re: Canister layering

Should the water go through coarse filter, then towards the fine filter before the media, or should it be the other way round?

    Re: Canister layering

yes that is correct, water go through coarse filter, fine filter, bio media and back to the tank. although I do not thing it is really matter, I just do not want the dirt blocking the ceramic ring or biohome pores, assuming it is even possible . The drawback is harder to change, you need to remove the media before you can replace the fine filter.

    Re: Canister layering

my 2 cents.. based on tanks that i had..

Small Fish only based tanks - up to gold fish
larger Ceramic Rings --> smaller sized bio media (if gold fish, alot of bio media is required)
Idea why no coarse sponge is that the waste material is soft and small. the larger CR is to break down the waste materials (which are already very small) and prompt dissolution of waste before the smaller bio media is used.

    Big Fish only based tanks
Prefilter (mech media --> coarse sponge --> fine sponge) --> Canister (Bio media)
Big fish, big waste. prefilter is to break it down before reaching the canister. alot of big fish, then go for sump.. canister won't cut it (In my opinion)

Planted + some algae crew only tank
    Coarse Sponge --> bio media
the coarse sponge is to trap rotting plant material.

I used to have two 2 feet tank that why i have extra filters and i buy second filter from the market place to salvage some parts.
After all that i end up with 6 eheim 3 2224 and 3 2222. Now only 4 ehiem working the other two need a little bit of refurbishing.
