Does the male look after the eggs after they are laid? What do you feed the babies with?

Here's another pic of it around 3wks old. The 1st pic was around 1wk old.
I don't feed them. My 1ft shrimp tank is full of snails and micro organism. Not too sure if the male looked after the eggs. I transferred the parents to my 2ft tank without knowing the female spawn. :P 2wks later, voila! 2 baby badis came out of my thick riccia. hope they are male badis.

This is interesting fish. Wondering can mix in the community tank? Have search the web but have little information on them. Understand for some keepers that they only like live food; true? Read somewhere they also feed on frozen food. But it will be good if they feed on dry food. Anyway, what is the life span of these fish? Please advise if possible. Thanks.

BTW, how much does it cost per fish now? Thanks.

They can be kept in a community tank provided it's heavily planted if agressive fishes are around. Most only take live or frozen food. I have around 10 of them and only 1 learnt to eat pellets. The longest with me now is around 4mths old. Managed to spawn some that is around 2 mths old. They are indeed interesting and beautiful fish to keep!

cost around $1.50 to $2.00 each. some lfs sells >$2.00.... get a pair and u probably don't have to buy anymore. :P
    What da fish!

Moss-seow, with this sort of attitude, you'll never be able to raise a brood of Scarlet Badis fry, which are extremely small.

One of the main ingredient to failure is lack of preparation. These fry require micro-sized foods for at least 3 weeks before they're stable and large enough to eat freshly hatch BBS.

Spawning fishes is one thing but until you're able to raise a brood, can one call it a 'successfully breeding'. Finding a survivor or two, is what I call 'accidental'. [To be honest, I was just 'lucky']

To start off, stop treating Scarlets like cichlids, where a shell or inverted flower pot is used. Instead, throw the breeders into a 3gal plastic tank with lots of java moss, feed as generously as the breeders can consume and leave them alone.

Remove the parents after a week and feed the tank with microscopic soup, eg. infusoria, paramecium and microworms. I said 'tank' because you probably won't be able to see the fry.

    Good luck and try again.
I'm back & keeping 'em fingers wet,
    Ronnie Lee

For those looking for it, the shop next to NA has a tank of large Scarlet Badis for $2 each. Many females with big belly.
    Corydoras: 2 x adolfoi, 1 x agassizii, 5 x albino aeneus, 3 x arcuatus, 4 x atropersonatus, 3 x axelrodi, 6 x axelrodi variante B, 4 x caudimaculatus, 5 x duplicareus, 8 x goldlines, 3 x kanei, 3 x loretoensis, 6 x melini, 4 x panda, 6 x schwartzi, 3 x similis, 4 x sterbai, 4 x surinamensis, 5 x trilineatus, 4 x tukano & 3 x zygatus

How do you guys differientiate between a female and a male? I have harboured thoughts of keeping a species tank for them ever since I got a couple of them months ago.

Adult female Badis are dull in colour unlike the bright red males.

Heh, now I am also into Babis Badis breeding. I got lots of tall plants, and many other fishes like Croaking gourami, Choc gourami, Honey gourami, dwarf pencils, kuli loaches and Red line torpedo, will they attack the hatchlings?

I read that badis badis are aggressive towards its own kind.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

if u really want to breed them suscessfully, it is best keep them in a small tank with marbles as substrate. remove the parents after the spawn coz they will eat the eggs. and forget about keeping with other fishes if u want to see badi fries. those fishes that u mentioned are some great eggs and fry hunters! goodluck.
    What da fish!

Err.. Badis badis is a much larger species from India. This small scarlet badis is called Dario dario and comes from Bangladesh if I remember correctly. Do not mistake them for one another.

Badis badis is a cave spawner. Dario dario is an egg-scatterer.
    Fish.. Simply Irresistable
