Can anyone tell me why my classic 2211 stops working after about 3 weeks? I have it set up with a 50cm tank with half filled water but the inlet is fully submerged. I would prime it and it will work beautifully with good flow from the rainbar. But somehow, after about 3 weeks, it will stop pumping, i figured air bubbles have invaded the canister and i do not know why.

you must follow the manufacturer's placement of intake and output height. Also make sure that the hoses are straight and short.

Where is the canister filter in relation to the tank?

The canister is placed below the tank, under a table where the tank sits.

Its probably due to your water level being much lower than your outflow and inflow, so if the electrical power happens to cut off for a brief moment (like during intermittent/momentary power trips while you are not around), the water in both pipes drop down to match the lower water level, then the filter might not have enough power to draw in and push the water back up to resume the siphon.

But there's no power outage, not even a brief moment 😔

Well, unless you watch the filter every second of the day and night... you wouldn't be able to know for sure.

Recently i experienced a momentary power outage recently at my place while i was in and it only lasted for a few seconds, all the electrical outlets stopped working and my computer switched off, then a few seconds later everything resumed again on its own (maybe some electrical work being done at my apartment block at that time and the main power junction was reset). I've had family member plug a faulty hair dryer into a socket late at night and it tripped only the electrical sockets in my home (the room lights, aircon and fans all still working), so all my tanks had no power until next morning, then someone reset the power box, but no one told me about it until much later.

I've even had people looking for plug to charge their phone accidentally switch off and unplug the wrong power socket (which powered my tanks) then realize their mistake a while later and switch it back on again... lots of possibilities.

Ok, I'm convinced. There was a power outage some weeks back, power stopped for 2mins because of a short. Then when I reset the tripped breaker, the filter came back with strong outflow. Just like before. So I'm still not sure why it will stop pumping completely till not a drop from the rain bar

Hmmm... is the motor and impeller still spinning? Or is it totally stopped?

Spinning but no outflow. I'm overseas and this is what was told to me. Family does not know how to restart the canister. Told them to power off, just in case motor running dry. Always happen when I travel. Dang!!!

Do a visual to see if there is any kinks in the hoses and if you have installed quick release vlaves, check to see if the are opened. A spinning impeller with no output should mean something is restricting the return pipes.

Another part that may need you to further look at is the Max operating height. If the Tank and Canister's hieght is above the recommended range it may be the issue.

maybe it was running dry for a long time , could have damage the motor

There is this possibility that you mentioned. Assuming this is the reason, will the filter run well for 3-4 weeks then stop functioning? Because the last time it stop pumping, it may have been running dry for a while. But when I re-prime it, it ran ok for about a month. Then stopped.

Done all that. No kink, valves open.. Now I'm unsure about the height thing

By chance, does anyone know what's the max height separation ??

    Re: Eheim Classic 2211

The ideal length of hose to use on any Eheim canister filter is 6ft. Forgotten where I pick this info from. But I would use lesser than that. Also another tip is to not pack too much media in the canister filter as this would affect flowrate in the long run.

Touching on media, do give the wool some washing or rinsing (tank water) and open the impeller compartment to see if muck, debris or even snails is causing the problem.

I bought a 2260 used from a hobbyist and flow rate was rather weak. Opened up everything gave it a thorough cleaning with hot water and found small snails comming out from the canister return port.

I will start to reduce some media when I get home... Read this on the net as well.. ThankS

The length of the inlet hose I'm using is barely 2.5' and similarly on the outlet hose.
