Wabi Kusa Concept- Advice Needed

Hi guys! I really need as much guidance as possible about the Wabi Kusa concept of growing plants.
Having watched some youtube tutorials, i know the basic of how to go about doing it...

Just a few questions...

1) What is the ball made of to tie the moss down to? Are there alternatives we can DIY or do shops like GC sell them?
2) What kind of liquid ferts are needed to dose on the ball to ensure healthy growth?
3) What are the type of plants that can thrive in the Wabi Sabi environment? i.e. low light, low moisture.

Any advices are greatly appreciated and will go a long way in helping me realise my FYP final design as i will probably be going ahead with it.
(Doing my Honours in Product Design now)
