Hi guys, just wanted to know what kind of filter is best for my 2ft shrimp tank. I can afford a canister filter but read somewhere that it isn't as good as a sponge filter. I wanna start right and not waste money. Which filter should I go with? Sponge, canister or HOB? If so what are the brands you guys can reccomend to me. Haha sorry I'm kinda new![]()

A reason why sponge filter is better is because it prevent shrimplet from being suck in.
Depending on how you see it.
The sponge filter will take up space in the tank. It may be an eyesore to others.
A canister do not take up space in the tank, but to prevent shrimplet from getting suck in you can:
Use sponge covering the inlet.
Fine filter mesh
Sponge filter good is because all the good stuff is accessible to shrimps and shrimplets. Also no sucking up of shrimplets. Canister intake can be covered with stainless steel mesh from gush or ans to prevent shrimplets sucked up.
But overall canister provides best filtration against sponge filter because it provides biological, chemical and mechanical
Recent studies shows that putting recent studies in your statement have a higher percentage of trust people put into your recent studies. What?
Still a newbie in shrimp keeping but in my opinion, external canister with undergravel inlet would be a good choice.
Saw an interesting article from GC website.

Any filter is good for shrimp, just add a sponge or mesh as a prefilter, so that shrimplets don't get suck in.
