    Hi bros,
I'm not sure if this question has been asked before, but still I hope you guys don't mind answering it again for me
I bought some plants from Sea View and they said it's aquatic plants. However, my friend said they are not. So is there any rule of thumb that can help me correctly identify those.
Anyway, I notice that some plants are packed in the plastic bag and without any water. So are those non-aquatic?
I also attached a picture of my tank with the plants. will be great if you can tell me which ones are non-aquatic so that I can get rid of them before they rot.
Thanks and hope to hear from you guys soon.
    Cheers,

Re: How to identify non-aquatic plants?

If not mistaken, The fern on the left, background right; and the broad leaf green plant with red hue on right side are not aquatic.

Can't say all plants packed without water is non aquatic...haha have to see and research them...haha... normally seaview do write the plant name on the bags, google them...haha at least thats what I did.

Hi bro wongce, thanks. Unfortunately not all the plants are named in Sea View especially those cheap cheap one for $.80 per bunch :. I think those that you said not aquatic are w/o name ones haha

Haha...your nick is cowputer? Very unique haha...

Well its hard to blame shopkeeper... not all are really plant savvy...

Well, maybe you can have them submerge partially... you can have a emerge scape at the same time...something like a vivarium...haha vivarium is quite interesting too....

Re: How to identify non-aquatic plants?

That is the problem in the industry. Most Local fish shop are traditionally based their trade on fishes. Plants are just an add on revenue. A lot do not have adept knowledge on fishes let alone aquatic plants. The LFS will just take whatever the plants distributor pass on to them to sell.

That been said, there are shops like Fishy business and green chapter that have more knowledge on aquatic plants, and therefore are able to dish out better advice as well as recommendation. the price might be slighty different but specialise knowledge, advice and service comes will a price. Which i feel is reasonable. Their links are above at the banner. Pay a visit to them, you will know the difference and it is a good chance to marvel at their tanks.

Re: How to identify non-aquatic plants?

At Seaview the 0.80 plants are usually not suitable for growing fully submerged. The fully submerged ones are hung on the right and range from 1.50 onwards. Those on the left except those grown on driftwood are usually for vivarium and terrarium.

Re: How to identify non-aquatic plants?

    Hi bros,
@wongce: I have decided to remove those non-aquatic ones from the tank on the concerns that they will rot in my tank haha
@bennyc: Thanks for your recommendation. I will try to drop by one day, but it's a bit out of my way actually
@qngwn: wow, you must be a very regular customers. I also think those 0.80 are not really aquatic ones, so I have stopped buying them even though they are quite cheap haha

Re: How to identify non-aquatic plants?

The fern looking plant in the background right corner is terrestrial. The plant in the kitty corner (front left) is terrestrial (I think, *scratches head). Ferns with a woody stem and or woody hard roots are terrestrial. Aquatic fern roots are always hair like.

I've been scammed a few times when I 1st started planting tanks. I've learned to research species before purchases. But I've been burned before. Once raising hell at a LFS to get my $18USD back...

    research is key

    Hi Chad,
Yes I totally agreed with you that almost all newbies will burn a great deal of $ on non-aquatic plants before he learns his lesson. Same goes for me, after spending almost 50 bucks on rubbish, now I have started to do research before wasting any further $.

Left side are land plants, you will notice the leaf quite different.

Right side & some in center are aquatic plants with some of them being cultivated in emerged state.

Those packed without water and still standing strong. Land plants or cultivated emersed can do that.

Re: How to identify non-aquatic plants?

Made a mistake and bought a plant labelled Bolbitis sp. from seaview, when it turned out to be a terrestrial fern, the maidenhair fern.
I actually thought i got a new type of bolbitis which is quite attractive looking, lol.
Had to search the internet for a long while to identify the fern.
    When in doubt, don't buy.

Well... at least you didn't get suckered into buying Fittonia sp. plants, that's perhaps one of the most common terrestrial plants new planted tank owners get by mistake. Who can resist those colorful green and red veined leaves right?

Plant suppliers seem to love quietly slipping those amongst other pots of aquarium plants at LFS... just waiting to snook newbies.

I for one cannot resist its charm too. Bought it when I was a total noob. Melt within a week in the tank.

It needs a high humid environment or it will wither quite fast.
