    Hi everyone,

I had set up a 60cmx40cmx45cm tank two month plus/3 month ago. Currently using t8 2x24w light, using borneowild plant soil. Mainly consist of anubias petite and some bucephalandra. However about 1 month ago, i start noticimg some leaves edge of bucephalandra and anubias had black beard algae. Also my two driftwood are cover with it too. (i had google and it looks like black beard algae) currently doing like once a week bout 30 percent water change. Please help as it seems to be spreading.

I was wondering if i were to stop doing water change for the time being and lowering the lights to a dymax t5 1x18 w light for 6 hours. Will it helps? Was previously dosing easycarbo and lush before the outbreak. Please advise... Thank you

Will changing the light from t8 2x24 w to one single t5 18 w helps? Do i need to over dose with excel?

Careful when overdose with Excel. Might kill fishes and shrimps. I encountered it sometimes back. Slightly overdose with higher co2 seemed to completely removes them.

6 hours per day of lighting seemed good for me. But do trial and error.

I introduced yamato already. But they dont seems to be interested in this algae.. Nerite snails got eat this algae? Anyway could someone enlighten me what cause this algae? Some website i see seems to suggest not doing waterchange and overdosing excel in the tank. In the past used to think that doing water changes regularly is good for the tank but now i am confused. And i use to dose borneowild lush with easy carbo. Now dont know want to dose anot ready. Any expert please teach me.

Yamato is just a cleaning crew for the BBA, water circulation is another factor that can be considered. Below is a shot of Yamato munching BBA

If you have BBA on a couple of plants which are removable (eg anubias petite tied on a rock), I could recommend what i did before.

-Remove the plants with BBA from the main tank.
-Soak it in 3% hydrogen peroxide (from pharmacy) for a couple of seconds in a separate container. Give it a good rinse.
-Then place the affected plants in another small tank of water. This tank had no fishes. Only a small HOF to keep water flowing (circulation & to prevent mosquitoes)
    - Dose the water with 'more' Excel & AlgaeExit. I had my small clip on LED lights on for about 4hrs a day.
    - In about 1.5 weeks, the BBA died off. Trimmed off any unsightly leaves and the plants were as good as new before going back into the main tank.

I currenting am running two filters one ehiem liberty 200 hang on filter the other is a small internal filter... However the internal filter just bought and put in yesterday. Am currently thinking of using algaexit from easylife to clear it. Any comments for it? If i lower the light to just a t5 18w light and do not dose liquid co2 or ferts will the bba disappear? Sorry for all the question i am new to this hobby. Hope u all can guide me.

Hi, i cant... The bba most of it on my driftwood. I fear that it will continue to grow in infect the rest of my plants. Do you think using algaexit in the tank is fine? However i had lower my light to one tube of t8 24 w already. Hoe it will help at the very least control it..

There no need to change your light. Just control and reduce your photo period for now. 24w x 2 over just 60x40x45 tank is just nice. Get rid of the algae first, then start controlling your photo period. Either use algexit or nuked it excel. Your call.

Dose fertz as normal, you don't want to starve other plants rite. Reduce the dosage of easy carbo if you are using it with algaexit. Or to be safe, don't use easy carbo since it having the same ingredient with algaexit.

If algaexit doesn't work then try using excel before starting all over again.

Yap had bought one bottle of algexit yesterday. Yesterday lst day using. No diference yet. Had stop all dosing of easycarbo n fertilizer dosing. Lights were down to 24w n for six hrs daily. Hope to see some difference a few week later before i going to start dosing again. Hope my plants can make it.

Re: Black beard algae in non co2 tank

Actually you don't need to reduce the lighting cos the lighting is just nice for your tank. For the last 3 months that you had the tank, how often do you dose your easycarbo a week? Did you change the amount of dosage and the frequency of easycarbo recently before the outbreak of BBA?

Yes before that i wasnt consistent in dosing easy carbo, sometime i dose something i didnt. I use a syringe and add 0.6 ml only. Didnt follow the instruction(1ml to 50 l water). I think that cause co2 to functuated. Didnt expext this to happen. Are we suppose to dose easy carbo every day? But i already decrease the light ready, if i go back to the old lighting i fear might cause more algae problems. It will b great if you can advise me on the easy carbo dosing and the nutrient dosing as well.
