    Hello,

Anyone is able to suggest what should material should I use to wrap around my tank so as to prevent my chiller from kicking in less often?

    Please kindly advice

    Thanks.

You can use styrofoam sheets and cut them to size, then stick them to the glass to enclose the tank and help insulate it... those blue colored flexible foam liners (usually used for keeping food cool in boxes) can also be used too.

    Hi Urban Aquaria,

Thanks for your reply. Have you had any personal experience with styrofoam sheet / flexible foam liners?

By how much can these material help to reduce the kick in time?

    Thank you once again.

When i was using a chiller on my CRS tank a while back, i tested using sheets of 3cm thick styrofoam to cover the front back and sides of the tank, the front piece i made it removable (just used some velcro to attach it on) so that i can open it anytime to view the shrimps, otherwise most of the time its covered too. The kick in duration didn't really change much, still 20-30 minutes, but the kick out duration was longer noticeable by around 30%-40%, so instead of 90 minutes, it was able to last around 110-120+ minutes before the next kick in.

Putting insulation around your tank will usually help extend the kick out timing, but how effective such insulation methods will be in reality would still depend alot on other factors like the placement and surrounding temperature of the tank, the set temperature, the amount of heat-generating equipment used (ie. lights, filter motor, pumps etc) and the efficiency of your chiller versus the tank volume etc.

The only issue with covering all sides of the tank is it looks abit unsightly... but if its not a display tank and its just to keep or breed shrimps, then it could be worth doing to help extend the lifespan of the chiller and also maybe save a few dollars in electricity bill.

    Thanks for sharing your experience!

That's the feedback I needed exactly. I shall go purchase some styrofoam and see if it will help the situation.

Thanks and have a good day!
