It depends, generally they will last at least a year, up to 2 years. If you have little rooted plants, the base fert can last for quite some time, compared to have a tank full of rooted plants.
Been trying to find answer to the below but unsuccessful.
What's the lifespan of the base fertiliser in general?
One lfs told me Dennerle Deponit-mix last 3 years, whereas JBL Aquabasis only 1, any truth to that?
If I were to mix the above 2, last 1 or 3 years?
Sorry for the seemingly stupid questions, but hope the gurus here can clear my doubts. Thanks!

You are not fertilizing through the water column. You depended on base fertilizer to do the job. And your rooted plants are not doing well, with smaller outgr0wing leaves. You know it is time to change.........

Does it matter? Substrate fertilization is difficult and most folks have no idea when things will run out like you till deficiency symptoms of plants sets in. All substrates last forever except perharps yearly cleaning up of excess "mulm" buildup. The JBL/Dennerle Deponit-mix cap off with lapis/lonestar gravel in my experience does get messy and ugly after several uprooting jobs of plants. I'll prefer to get something like Seachem flourite/Onyx-Sand and etc which looks good and does not look tacky after uprooting jobs.Originally Posted by suxthumb
For fertilization, go with the water column which is easy to reset when you overdo it (with a large water change) and can be tested if you wish to test for it.
