You can try checking at the more popular LFS like Seaview and C328, they usually get regular stocks of Boraras brigittae (aka chili rasbora).

Finding healthy chili rasboras with nice deep red color (not those leftover "lak sek" ones)... now that is the real challenge.

Well, i notice that those that have not much color or no color tend to stay that way even when settled in a tank and well fed, their colors are still never as nice. Its still best to only pick the ones which are already showing the distinct deep red color in the LFS tank... those will have colors which intensify even further with good food and care.

"Mosquito rasbora" is more of a "catch-all" label usually put up by LFS who are not aware or can't ID the various boraras variants, quite often they could instead turn out to be boraras merah or boraras urophthalmoides, sometimes even boraras maculatus too, all of which have different colors and patterns. You'll just have to check the fishes closely to ID them properly before purchase.

According to many sources online, boraras brigittae are schooling fish and only the dominant male will display a deep red colouration. All others in the school will not have the same colouration. Meaning, even if you picked the reddest of each lot and placed them together, their colours will fade as their hierarchy is determined (it also probably means you have all males).

There was mention that their colouration will improve with proper tank setup. Meaning peat swamp biotopes, 25 degree water and low flowrates with no other tankmates (species only) since they'll lose out in feeding. Also, live food in the form of artemia and micro/grindal worms would be preferred.

While i do agree that the dominant males will develop a deeper red coloration... based on my own experience keeping them over the past few years, the other males will still retain the nice red coloration too, just not as dark red.

Picking the reddest of each batch at the LFS from the start basically helps to ensure that you get the best "proven" males which are still able to display nice coloration even in a group hierarchy. I have handpicked and kept groups of up to 20+ of them which were all able to maintain a nice red coloration in a planted community aquarium.

Some of my examples from previous threads:

I have tried keeping less red ones from LFS too (they might be females or perhaps even weak colored males), but no matter how good the conditions are or how well they are fed, even when kept in the same tank for a long time, those still remain bland with less colors than the others.

So if the plan is to get a nice red colored group of boraras brigittae, just have to focus on hand picking the best ones.
