base fert plus gravel

i'm going to use seachem flourite, any suggestions how many 10 KG packets i need to buy...i'm not topping up with gravel, using seachem flourite alone. Is 2 x 10KG packet enough??

Just bought 9 packets. But i think they come in 7kg packs only. Meant for my 4 x 2 x 2 tank. See below on how to calculate the amount, based on your tank base area. From a 'shifu' moderator, best to lay base with peat moss and mulm (black stuff lying at base of tank or cannister filter) About 1/4" thick, then add flourite

You can buy commercially prepared peat-moss from LFSes ( I've seen them in NA, c328... ). Open up your cannistor filter, and you see all that gunk at the bottom of your filter? That's mulm... just collect it and put it with the peat moss. Alternatively you can squeeze out your filter wool to get the mulm stuck on it.

I don't know if it is appropriate to put this here. Anyway, can anyone provide a review on the JBJ base fert. I can't seem to find their website (if there was any), and seeing it used in initial setups- it looks rather sandy.

Regarding fluorite, I have been told that they are sharp on the edges. Wouldn't this be detrimental to the plant?

As for peat, you can get this brand 'Horti' from NTUC at just under 5 bucks. It's a tad tedious to prepare though. It has to be boiled first, but certainly cheaper than prepared peat like Azoo.

Hi guys,

What is the average price for seachem flourite (7kg)?
I am thinking of seachem onyx, like the black color more, from seachem website there is not much difference between the 2 except for slight buffering from onyx.


Anyway, can we just replace the peat moss and mulms with fert subtrate? should have about the same effect right? (other the cost of cost )
