    Hi all,

I am looking for a type of plant named "Hong Liu". It's stem and leaves are all red in colour. Is it a very demanding plant? I was thinking of using it for my background. Is it expensive? Is it available in Spore? If yes, where? Thanks!

    Regards

easier if you can include the scientific name. With all the names coming from other sources quite hard to determine what plant is it

I think you are refering to ammania gracilis. Very easy to grow and easily available. Should be quite cheap just order from well know LFS.

    Thanks Jack,

I just bought from the LFS at Havelock road, near Concorde Hotel. One pot for $1.50 . By the way, you have any idea how tall it will grow? I intend to use it for my background. I will post a photo tomorrow after I get hold of my digi cam.

    Thanks all for your help.

By the way, I have post photos as per attached I took last night.

With reference from The Aquarium Plant Handbook (page 125), I thought the plant I bought belongs to the Nesaea Species. They looked pretty similar
    though.

Any advice to keep it as red as possible?

What you have is not 'Hong Liu'. Did not try the plant you have, so no comment also.

I tried long ago and failed in this plant. Maybe I shall try again. Since the plant in the LFS looks so healthy and beautiful, it must be possible to keep it if the farms can do it.

Koah Fong, you mean failed in keeping this plant as in the leaves wither away, colour lost or the plant just melted? The lady boss told me simply that I must have CO2 in abundance and strong light. M keeping my fingers crossed. Really like the strong red colour, add more colour to my planted tank.

The red plant grew very slowly. And it got spot algae. So I gave up then.
The next time I get my hands on this plant, I will try again.
