How frequent should root fertilisers( those inserted into the substrate) like root monsters be added? Should I just follow the instructions regarding the frequency?
Also, any guidelines regarding how many to add, or just based on "feeling" depending on the size of tank (gravel surface area)?
Any advices would be greatly appreciated.

I do it based on feeling mostly, since root fertilisation is very difficult to gauge. (you don't know how much is being used up, how often, and whether or not it helps)

Most of the time I'll follow instructions too though. But that's alright, because I still have my liquid fert as the basis. Substrate fertilisation in my case is just a backup nutrient source.

What if your tank is filled with Echindorus and Crypts instead of stem plants? I understand that stem plants take much more nutrients from the water column, but Echindorus and Crypts get much of their roots.

So if that's the case, how can we be sure when to fertilize the tank?

Hmm... My tank has no base/root fert and it is full of Echindorus and Crypts... No problems at all, they just keep on growing and growng... My sword now has grown to almost taking over an area of 2ftx2ft! That's almost half the tank!... Dunno what to do with it now, as I wanna remove it but dun feel like throwing it away... My crypts also grown back from melted form...
    Read me! http://justikanz.blogspot.com/

    I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted! ), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted! ), C.tonkinensis(Melted! ), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii

Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
