    Hi,

I bought a 2nd-hand Eheim 2213 filter a year back and had been working fine , except it produces a lot of fine air bubbles no matter how long I run it.

Is it because the rubble seal loosen ? I think there are total of 4-5 clips which lock the filter cover , but 2 of them can not clip the cover tightly. Visually inspection on the 2 clips I don't find any damage, dent, or bent , and they are the same shape like the others. If suspects the cover is not tight and caused the air bubbles, why no water leak out from the cover gap ?

    Any clue ? THanks !

    Cheers

Looks like you found your problem. I'm using one of these too and all the clips snap down and lock the filter tight. By the way, if air can get in, water can also get out. Better sort this out. Replacement O-rings can be purchased at most shops.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

IMO it is unlikely that the air gets in between the cover and the canister because water, being somewhat under pressure of the swirling action of the impeller, will always attempt to get out before allowing air to get into the canister. The last time similar problem happens to me, I found that it is the surface skimmer that is letting in the air. Another time it happened to my apisto tank I realised that my CO2 air-stone is positioned too close to the filter inlet.

if you have a surface skimmer, remove it first.
change the o-ring and make sure that the pump head locks down tight.
gently rock the canister side to side to 'dislodge' trapped air bubbles. do this a couple of times. this should remove the trapped air and you'll should not have any fine bubble coming from the filter outlet.

i also have the same problem with my 2217.

took it out of my system and place it in the bucket. it will not pump well and when i shake it, lots of bubble comes out but the water is not leaking out.

i wasted a lots of water trying to get the pump working.

is this truely the problem with the o-ring or is something else?

    thanks

latest update on my 2213 filter. After replacing the o-ring , the filter works like charm, no bubble after that.

Physical inspect on the old o-ring vs the new one, don't see any difference, except the new one is tighter fit.

hi neon, i use to have 2213 also. i know to start up the filter ppl wasted a lot of water. what i use to do is to hook up everything without any water inside the filter first. then remove the tube from the 2213 out flow hole and use the siphon equipment commonly use, fix it to the out flow hole to siphon water from the tank. (hopefully clear so far )
when you see water flowing into the 2213 from the tank, remove your siphon equipment and wait for the water to fill up. the trick here now is that you have to wait for the water to flow out a bit from the out flow hole and then quickly close the tap on the intake flow pipe to stop the water from flowing out(you might want to prepare a bucket at the out flow hole first).
now you can fix back everything and start up the filter. sounds a bit troublesome but after many different methods, i think this is the most straight foward and easy. hope it helps.

    Hi bro,

    Thanks for the suggestion .

For me, the method of activating the 2213 :
    1) first most important accessory is any hose valve control (in my case, I attached a eheim valve which has 2 valves and can be detached), and attach to the intake of 2213. Shut the valves and detach joint of the valves , so the water from the tank to the hose still remain inside. Likewise the water in 2213 will not flow out.
    2) the return hose from the 2213 , I simply disconnect and return all the water inside into the tank.
    3) clean or service the 2213 in a big container or pail.
    4) when recommissioning the 2213, make sure the water in the 2213 is filled to the brim. Actually to fill up water can be avoided, as the return hose still holds water and if reopen the valve water will suck in and fill up the 2213 as it normally sits below the tank water.
    5) while steps 4 water is filling up , ensure the return hose is not connected , to allow air to be pushed out. Get ready to connect the return hose if water start to gush out.
    6) now , start the 2213 and shake it left and right few times to let out all the air.

I prefer any canister which the water inlet is at the bottom and the return is at the top. ie 221x series and 226x series. Especially love the design of 226x as there is a discharge valve at the bottom . I design my tank cabinet and PVC piping according to this 226x canister , so that all WC, washing of canister and media all can be done below the cabinet (using tank water as the inlet is from bottom ), discharge the dirty water using the discharge valve, repeat the steps again until the medias are washed at the same time doing WC.

    Cheers
