Recently, got JBJ lights from fellow forumer, and the lights went bonkers on me. Of the 3 15W tubes, only 2 lights up.

I could go back to JBJ but warranty up liao lar.. I believe.

I am very sure the lights are ok cos' when I did a switch in position, the light went on.

I suspect 3 possible areas of errors:

    1. E-ballast old and not working any more to fire up 3 lights.
    2. The endcaps (twist and turn ones for FL) contacts are old and doesn't connect well to the FL tube's contacts.
    3. the electric cables are loose for the last (no working) tube.

But in any case, I was trying to locate a place in Singapore where I can get hold of these lighting supplies especially good E-Ballast for FL (Good German brand ones?)

Experts out there, please recommend shop. Thanks!

Most likely a faulty ballast issue. You need to know if its e-ballast or normal iron-core ballast.

Shd be e-ballast? Lights up immediately without the flickering..

    What's a normal iron-core ballast?

    JBJ's ballast doesn't look like those E-Ballast I bought.

Ballast tends to comes in all shapes and sizes depending on brands and makes. I bought one from china with no schematic diagrams but the boss did wire up the thing and show me that it is in working order. The issue now is if the e-ballast will fit the casing like what the original ballast would do. Did you check the e-ballast of the light set?

What do I have to take note?

I can see all the capacitors, etc etc, on it.. It's got no covers one. Shd I bring the lights to this shop and check with them too?

Mmmm...is it a starter or capacitor? mini-control circuit? Geeee...better bring the whole thing to the shop then. If you go to Nature Aquarium, ask for Mr Chan.

capacitor? think it should be the starter.
if possible, remove the ballast and have a feel of the weight. iron core ballast is heavy. or you can look around the ballast and check whether there is any brown coloured board inside. if you see on then it is and e-ballast. and e-ballast is light.

since you are not familiar with electrical stuff, bring it nature aquarium or electrical shops.

Some light sets which use elecronic ballasts only have a few electronic components (resistor, capacitors, ect). connected with wirings & are not enclosed in a casing. That's why when you open up the light set, you can see these components.
Elbiru & Osram ballast have the electronic components enclosed within a casing.
If you want to replace the faulty ballast, you will need to disconnect the electronic components from the lamp. A re-wiring need to be done from the lamp to the new ballast. The only issue is, as stated by PeterGwee, if the new ballast can fit in nicely to the light set.

    Thanks bros for the information.

I went over to Lian Eng today and the uncle was willing to do up the wiring for me. He showed me a black piece of Philips EBallast that looks like the standard one shown in the second link below.

But I didn't manage to take down the model.

I was curious. Anyone experienced the difference between these ballasts? Or equivalent ballast?

Btw, he hasn't do the wiring for me as he didn't have stocks for the eballasts and had suggested that I come down on Monday instead.

I wanted to do some "homework" first. :>
