Hmm... When I did my total re-scape, the tank was bare with only substrate and ~60% water with all my critters still in the tank when I was re-arranging the wood and re-planting... I am too lazy to chase them around to catch them to a temp tank or pail... Yamatos are ok.

Huh? Then surely need to have the tank dry.

    1) Retain as much of the tank water as possible.
    2) Some will suggest keeping also as much of the mulm on the gravel bed as possible.
    3) Retain as much of your old substrate as possible too and dun use some of the tank water to rinse it slightly.
    4) Keep your critters in some of the original tank water and aerate the temporary quarters.
    5) When the silicone dries, then continue the scaping.

However, as you mentioned that your present is infested with BGA, so I am not sure if the above can be applied. There are threads on this subject. Maybe you can do a search for better answers.

yr silicon cannot cure in water...It is very difficult to rescape the background, unless it is a dry tank...

if you're going to install the background. you must drain the tank (but you should be able to leave the substrate there, I suggest you fish out all the critters, then drain completely, filters shift to the holding tanks,

then install the silicon (you'll probably need something to hold them up to the side of the wall, I used lots of cloths pegs and containers to press it against the glass wall.

    top up the substrate.

I think the minimum time to cure the glue should be 24 hours...

You almost doing 100% rescape... (After completed minimum needs a week to stable the tank)

You got no other choice, transfer all to a bare tank with exsiting water & filter.

therefore i should transfer the present tank water to the holding tank, do u still need to acclimatize the occupants when introducing them to the holding tank?

You don't need to acclimatize them since using the same tank water parameter...

remember to keep ur filter running in the temporary tank so that your filter media wun dry up.

ur fish will prob be very stressed out by this ordeal of being chased ard in the tank. so be careful of parasitic outbreaks.
