    The situation goes like this,

My small 1ft planted tank is situated in my room for about 5 months and i tend to turn on the air-con quite alot lately due to the hot weather.

I have sinus since i was young and it kinda go away when i got older. but just recently, it came back and my mum started blaming the fish tank. She said the water evaporates and spread around the room to be dirty n and all and i'll start sniffing in all the dirty air while sleeping. Well it did sound quite true but could it really be true?

I would like to seek some opinions and advice from the experts here.

Hope to hear from you guys

    thanks

Edit: Clearly you can spell... So, please spell properly and in full, thanks.

Water when it evaporates is just water vapour, so the "dirtiness" of the tank should still stay in the water...

It is just like distilling water so that we can drink dirty water if desperately stuck in the desert (learnt that in secondary school, right?)...

So I think, there is actually not much ground to it... Moreover, the air in an air-con room is actually very dry, so some moisture is good... Your sinus is probably due more to the air-con alone... Since our atmospheric humidity is definitely higher than your moistured air-con room...

That's my take on the situation... Me no medication doc...

Vincent is right.. water evaporates leaving dissolved substances behind.

However it'll be hard to convince mothers based on scientific fact.

But what if the water evaporates but leave behind dried particles at the sides of the tank that can be carried by the wind?

Just like folks who spit in public, it dries up but surely whatever is there gets blown away.

Use a fan instead? Open the windows for proper ventilation. I only turn on my air-con when the humidity becomes unbearable. So far these few months still OK for me.

It's the aircon... Sinus problems are usually started with constant use of air-conditioning. My cousin will have this sinus problem whenever she sleeps in air-conditioned rooms.

But maybe your mother just wants to get the tank out of the room... Like my mum! Haha...

According to my mum, fish tank should be in the bedroom, due to some superstitious belief, or is it due to bad fengshui. Can't remember, but same goes to TV as well. All I can say is that, I was forced to move my extra tanks out of my room, once ;P

Simon, I think you meant to say 'fish tanks should not be in bedrooms'...

Yes, in Feng Shui, fish tanks are BAD for bedrooms... But I think a lot of us have no choice... I would love to move my 4+1 tanks out!

I have sinus and its got nothing to do with teh tanks.. the tanks actually help because they help to humidify the dry air..
    ITs the air-con.. period.
However, its not just because of the cold climate.. i have a feeling tis what the air con is blowing into the room.. when i'm overseas in clod climate my sinus actually gets better..

Looking at problem, why not have the air condition filter wash? It might be one of the real causes. But not by you of course, the dust and dirt in the filter would make you feel even worse!

Old wives tale... older folks (with all due respect to them) have the funniest analogies at times.

I hear it all the time from my mom as well.

wow, thanks for all the replies.

I do wash the air con filters often and i only start to use the air con often for the past few days due to hot weather. Guess it might be an old wives tale but my mum isn't that sort which has old fashion thinking.

Think i'll just transfer the tank to the living room for a while and see if my sinus gets better, its the only way to prove it to her. haha

Bad feng-shui if you have fish tanks in bedroom. That's what I heard, it causes money loss. More $$$ spent on doctor visits. In this case affecting your health as well. Pepple with sinus & sensitive nose problems should avoid getting in & out of air-con rooms too frequent. Because while in air-con room the air is dry. When you get out, the atmosphere is moist/wet. Sudden change of dry/wet affects the nasal passage. Learnt this from my kid's nose specialist.

My kids used to have persistent sinus problem and had been seeing ENT specialist in KK. My fish tank is right outside their bed room. I consulted the doctor and was assured not due to fish tank but most likely dust mite in the bedsheet or matteress.
Their sinus getting better now as they grow up and my fish tank is still at the same place.
    Hope this help.

Lol the strangest things happen when rational decuction and fact take a backseat to superstition and tradition... Anyway, I have a sinus and a 6ft tank in my bedroom, right next to my bed.

Now logically speaking, all the bad luck generated by that would've brought a 747 or asteroid crashing through the window by now

As air con room is enclosed, the ventilation isn't good. Try opening your window to allow fresh air into your room every day for 10-15min (if your air con is on everyday). I think it is the same as a "sick" office building.
