Hey guys, do you have any good suggestions for relatively reliable and less expensive chillers? I've tried plan for a DIY chiller, but think its too troublesome. Thanks in advance!

I suggest you give us more information like what is your budget, what is the size of your tank.

That will help us in giving you the recommended chillers

You could buy the new 1/4 or 1/2 horsepower Hailea chiller. These are great chillers and my friend has 1 brand new unit which he needs to sell.

Get a used resun from marine forums and pay people to flush the system like what Benny suggested. With your budget you can even get the pros to change out the noisy fan for a quieter version. I understand the pros also clean up the inside of the chiller for you. There has been good reviews on the service.

But bear in mind that resun seemed to have high power (wattage, not horsepower) consumption when comparing hp to hp.
So in theory the electrical bill will be higher given the same run time per day.
I do not know if changing out the noisy fan will lead to better efficiency.

For that kind of budget, it's a bit tight, bearing in mind it's going to power a 3 ft tank (I assume it's only 3 X 1.5 X 1.5 ft).

Perhaps you can scout around for a used one in the marine forums. Just flush it clean and you will have no problem using it for a fresh water planted aquaria.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
