Long hours of lighting won't help if you're not providing the other nutrients they need, e.g. CO2, nutrients, good water flow and low temperature.
Don't overdo the Nitrate, moss does not really enjoy a very rich water column and in my experience tend to grow better/faster with a lean water column. Cool temps help alot too as said above.
You could always grow it emersed to speed up the growth rates?
moss tend to trap dirt also. some of my moss look "dirty" cos i feed my fishes daily
i'm ADDicted to this wonderful hobby
I would suggest
1) Cool water temperature
2) Good water movement
3) Good CO2 distribution
4) Good lighting

), C.tonkinensis(Melted!
), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
clean water n cool water temp is all dats needed
... always look at the bright side of life![]()
The water movement (and good CO2 distribution) is to prevent irritating hair algae from growing at the moss... Algae and moss seem to be the best of partners when given the chance...![]()

Agree...
Low temp, about 26C & below.
Clean water, that's why if you keep fish, also provide shrimps to clean the moss .
Since moss is algae's best friend, if you can't keep your tank water with balance nutrients, better keep the moss in low maintenance (non CO2) tank.
Other wise will end in throw clumps of moss in trash![]()
Hi all, i am in a dilemma with good water movement, cos when i first started with planted tank & shrimps, i introduced water movement by internal pump with normal filter medium. Think it brought about current flow but also circulation of gravel debris. My shrimps nearly went "extincted". I linked it to my pump strong circulation, am i right?Originally Posted by Justikanz

Plants need rest period to grow[store the food] So turning on the light longer than 12 hrs in't going to help IMHO.
Hair algae once you get it it doesn't matter if the flow is strong or low. Some flow is good. Some shrimp can help but it depends where the moss is.[if it's high up, they won't risk it with fish around to pick them off]
Pat your moss when you do WC. That really helps.
IMHO, 24-26C, CO2, medium to high light, a modest flow, average to lean water column and you'd have it growing pretty quickly, 1-2 inch a month.

Good flow does not equal to strong flow. Just enough to create a mild and gentle current and distribute CO2 as evenly as possible, not to create a underwater typhoon!...![]()

Yup, to release the trapped dirt. You'd be surprised how much mulm gets trapped in it!Then siphoned it off as you do WC.

Comb it with a toothbrush to remove as much as you can. Then you can add more CO2.
If still a problem, take the DW and moss and soak it in bleach for 30secs.
5% bleach plus 95% water. [eg: 75ml bleach + 1425ml water.]

My TW moss do grow, but together with hair algae (or stinghorn?)Originally Posted by Justikanz
So i guessed it's really the water movement that i lack.. will a rain bar be good enough? Is distribution of CO2 via reactor Ok?

i am curious to know to how to pat too.Originally Posted by SmallFish

You put your hand in the tank and pat your moss slowly a few times. This will cause the mulm trapped in it to puff out. So standby a gravel vacuum to vacuum this fallout.![]()
