    Discovered: New mini tank chillers

I just stumbled across this today.

    JBJ now has:
    1. a 1/20 (600 BTU/h) HP Nano-Chiller for tanks up to 25 (US)G, and
    2. a 1/15 (900 BTU/h)) HP Mini-Chiller for tanks up to 40(US)G
Link. These babies are compressor type chillers. Most mini-tank chillers in the market use peltier technology.

40G is approximately the water volume in a 2ft cube planted tank after deducting gravel, plants, wood, top allowance, etc.

25G is approximately that of a 1.5ft cube planted tank.

The footprint is a little smaller then 8"x13" with a height of 14.1". But the site only listed the 115V models. Not sure if there are the 220-240V models.

They will draw about 2 amps which translates to about 230W. Even if it runs continuously 24/7 (which it won't), it will cost about S$35 a month on the electrical bill.

Anyone seen these babies in Sg? I wonder what the heat production will be like.

Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

I just emailed Aquanautics, the JBJ distributor here. The chiller is not available in Singapore yet, but they will be bringing it in. Unfortunately, they can't give a time frame yet.

Just got a reply from JBJ.

They do not come in 220V and the recommended flow rate is 106gph to 160 gph (401 l/h to 606 l/h).

oh, but there is one thing i don quite understand about it, 24 hour, that will mean the environment is rather hot isnt it?

if not, whey do they need to go to the extend of operating 24 hour?

Guan, a chiller operate 24hr but it is mostly on a standby mode until the water temperature start to rise by a couple of degree. Then it will switch on automatically.

Since, AquaNautics didn't give me any details about it, and given that there isn't 220V model yet, it'll probably take some time. I doubt JBJ would want to ignore the 220V market for too long. I checked an online store and the smallest JBJ Artica Titanium chiller, the 1/10HP model is $1,200. That's probably RRP, so do your guesstimation from there.

Regarding the bill... like what I put in brackets and the rest explained it is unlikely to run 24/7. The amount of time it actually runs depends on your preferred temperature. If you are going to set it at 25 degrees celcius if Singapore's climate, then the chiller will run very often for quite long.

I find keeping the tank at a constant temperature thru-out the year is probably more effective then a very low temperature. Most plants do quite well at 27 to 28 degrees celcius.

Good news! 220V model will be available... so now is just a question of when and how much. JBJ Sales followed up. Quoting the email below.

    Hello Vincent,
the min and max flow for either of the DBI-038 or DBI-050 is 106 gallons per hour to 160 gallons per hour.

Our Singapore office will offer the 220V version for the European and Asian Markets.

    thanks,
