Does anyone knows why apple snails sometimes float (they aren't dead) about on the water surface and sometimes they sink to the bottom?

They are sometimes feeding on the layer of protein that is on the surface of the water.

Bro, what is your tank specs? I don't know much, but from my experience, its like they were sleeping.

Sometime, I will over feed them, then you will see them go to slow motion after finish eating. Like human being, after eating too much, will got lazy...hehehehe.....

My tank's temperature is about 28 degrees centigrade. Not too sure about PH & other levels cos' I haven't been measuring them for a while. Anyway, they are all healthy & feeding well. It just puzzled me that apple snail has the ability to control their buoyancy. I have horned nerites too but they do not float like the apple snails

For apple snail, they need high PH else you will see some holes on their shell. And for nerites snail, they does not float, if that happend, mean end of it.

Apple snail seem to be very intersting and unique snail compare to other. They come in with variety color and size. I have hundred of them. And they do grow big. Don't worry about it, they are resistant. Your temperature is fine, they can tolarate up to 30 degrees.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I do see some holes appearing, and some algae growing on it's shell too!

Try to lower the temperature so as to prolong their lifespan..

Try to put in crush coral or liquid calcium.

And yes, if you lower the temperature, it will prolong their lifespan, but at lower temperature, they tend to be less active and eat less.

Thanks again, I hope raising the PH level with crush corals wouldn't hurt the other tankmates like cardinals, swordtails, guppies, otos & clown loaches
