My sump pump is leaking electricity

Hi folks,

My made in china sump pump (Sun Sun HQB-3900) is leaking electricity.
Used a test pen placed inside my tank and managed to determined that it was the pump rather than the powerhead which I used to power my co2 reactor.

Yes, I know, should have gotten an ehiem right? I can't help it, I am cheap!!

But before giving up, I thought why not give a shot. So, any advice (aside from remember to switch off the pump ) on how I can find the origin of hte leak and how to fix the pump?

Hi Bossteck,

Does pump electrical connection comes with a 2 pin plug or 3 pin?
If it is the 2 pin ones, could you unplug the connector and rotate the orientation of the pin such that the neutral and live is swap around! See whether it works?

you can try grounding your tank, puting stainless stell rod and connect it to ground.

Yes, the pump is connected to a 2 pin plug. Just rotate the orientation, that simple? Ok I will try it and update on the result.

When you say connect it to ground, what does that mean? So I will connect a piece of wire to the rod, then place the rod touching the tank water, what do i do with the other end of the wire? Will this mean that I won't get shock when I touch the tank water?

Yup, just rotate the orientation Theory is to change the live to netural

What Shadow mentioned was a wire one end to the probe (that stays in he sump) and the other end to the a 3 pin plug (that is to be tighten to the Earth- grounding portion)

However, if suai suai both method fail,do consider Aquabee. Do a comparison with Ehiem and you know which is better!

yup, that is right connect it to the middle pin of the 3 pin plug, that pin is suppose to be ground. I'm assuming that electrical wireing in your house is properly grounded.

Singapore house/flat should be ok.

An update, I tried the 'changing the orientation of the 2 pin plug trick' doesn't work, according to my test pen. No time to try grounding.

I will try to isolate the leakage over the weekend and update again.

Hi folks,

Another update. Turned out the pump isn't faulty after all. After seeking some advise from a friend, who told me that test pen cannot be trusted 100%, I decided to put my finger as a test pen (not recommended). Turn out, it was the powerhead which I used to power my co2 reactor that was the leaking current. I had since replaced the reactor and powerhead with a glass diffusser, something which I had wanted to do a long time ago.

Nevermind this... I would still like to give thanks to all who had replied to my initial query for sharing what they know. Thanks folks!
