A few weeks ago or close to a month ago, bought a moss ball from a LFS. Not those marimo moss ball, but those tied to bio ball with netting and a weight to prevent moss ball from floating.

Last week, when i took out the moss ball, i discovered that the heavy metal had acctually rust.. whole metal brown in colour. Rust till very badly. I believe its been there for very a long time.

Could it be that, that killed my CRS and Cherry shrimps?
    Metal posioning?

    Anyone experience that?

Shouldn't LFS use SS metal as a weight? Rather than those metal that will rust in water? Now i have tied a few piece of SS mesh as the weight.

i used to use soft lead to keep my plants down, then i realised not only do they rust and kill shrimps, they cause lead poisoning in your water-which kills shrimps also- So my advice is to take it out and anchor it with something else = p

same here , dont use lead weight. esp when your tank is small, the effect will be more intense.

I think it was discussed earlier that lead weights are dangerous, not sure if it was this forum or another. But anyway, my bioballs are all with SS mesh as weights before I introduce them into the tank.

Lead weight is used by LFS cos that's a very cheap material to use. Can't really blame them, when lead is soft and easy to manipulate as weights, besides being cheaper.
