    HOF? Hang On Front?

Sponge is best, together with coral chips or pieces to buffer the water pH. Active carbon is good for polishing the aquarium water but not as useful for a planted tank as it removes nutrients from the water. I avoid ceramic rings as it poisoned the tank water the last time my hands got itchy and i wanted to experiment by introducing it in the filter.

Using used filter media from a mature tank will definitely speed up the tank cycling process.

HOF will comes with sponge. Normally I add a few pieces of biohomme in the empty space behind the sponge. And also some small coral chips to buffer PH if it is above 7.0.

Actually, I am using cindered glass rings (much like ceramic rings), using this brand Mr O from Taiwan along with coarse and fine sponge for my tank, I don't have coral chips or such else to buffer the pH, in fact I am adding blackwater extract to down my pH to 6. Works really well for me. As far as I know, 7 to 6.5 is the most ideal pH level for a tank. A good HOF to look at is this Japanese brand that is only sold at the big LFS behind Ah Pek plant farm in Pasir Ris. There is a sponge filter at the inlet to prevent small shrimps from getting suck in.

a point to take note when looking for media is that better make sure it is pH neutral.
