Going on holiday which cam/lens?

Don't worry i'm not going anywhere, just want to know from all the Pros here.

If you're going on a holiday, what will you bring?

1) Digital camera
2) DSLR
3) which lens?

Often i see people stating the lighter the better but risking missing some shots.

Does that bother you?

Lets say you're going on a extended trip saying approx 15-21 days and most of the time you will be changing hotels. Will you still be bringing a load of equipment with you?

I respect those people who carries 3-4 lenses around almost the weight of FBO(Full battle order) and walking while taking pictures.

Please share your experience with us.

depends where you going and what you going to expect. More landscape, scenery then bring wide angle. Heading to the nature reserve and visiting the local butterfly park, bring your macro , if you going for both, bring both lenses.

Lugging a few lenses + water + all the other things isn't an easy feat.

Maybe i should train up more before going on a holiday. I just hate the ideal of lugging so many things along with bulky jackets and tons of other stuff.

Will anybody bring a macro lens for a tour? I'm just wondering.

me me me :P, I do bring it along but I leave it in my hotel room when I know there isn't any opportunity to use it. Same goes to the tripod, sometimes I bring it along but it never left the luggage

If staying in a place for a few days and staying same hotel i don't see the issue. The problem is something like backpacking. Always on the move. Still feasible?

Maybe it's time to do some shooting with you guys. Simon when teach me shoot butt?

then I suggest carry only the essential stuff, drop the grip, go with 2 range, WA and telezoom, but I do supposed a lens like the 17-85 IS or a 17-55 f2.8 will be a good choice, unless you intend to take a wide variety of things. For macro, I think the tamron 90mm will come in handy because of the weight. For tripod I use the SLK GM series, light, cheap and hardy. Do note that in some countries, theft/pickpockets are common and carrying a DSLR only encourage these people.

I think i still stick to the 24-105 IS. I'll be losing quite a bit of WA if i would to leave the 17-40 behind.

Seldom bring macro lens for a tour, don't really see the need. (correct me if i'm wrong)

as for macro, again depending on your trip and your intention. I bring mine along if I know I visiting a butterfly park or something to that nature. If you backpacking, it will be a nice piece to have, bring a 50mm f2.8 :P

I suggest a short macro lens, because it is light and apart from using it for macro, you can also use it for portrait shots

Well, I went to Jeju and Boracay recently and I brought the following

1. D80
2. Flash
3. 17-35mm
4. 18-200mm
5. 105mm Micro
6. Tripod

In Jeju, I almost died carry the above. Had to climb a mountain that took about an hour, and for those who know me, it's not an easy feat.

The recent Boracay trip, I took the above as well. But now smarter, leave the stuff in hotel. The type of bag is also important. If I am going backpacking, I will do a haversack, otherise the the Lowepro Steath Reporter 300 works best for me.

For the macro lens, i did not use it in Boracay but I went to the Botanical garderns in jeju with it. So need to plan your iternary and see where you are going.

Climb Ang kor wat with everything including tripod all the way up to the summit for sunset picture. The number of people up there is scary. The number of tripods is even scarier.

So which model of Stealth reporter is good for the following:
body
2 short lens + 1 optional
1 flash?
cf cards etc
portable hdd
water?
personal belongings

go for the 300. really good for everything above. If you going this Sunday, I will be bringing it anyways..... the 400 is too huge....

I do not recommend putting water though... in case it leaks...

I went that hill in Angkor Wat as well... that time have not picked up photography yet.... I almost died going up as well.... wanted to ask my wife to carry me....

Maybe before my next trip which is no where near i'll hop around and look for a new bag. I got a crumpler lookalike reporter but slinging the bag for a long period sores the muscles.

Guess i don't have a chioce.
