Dennerle crystal quartz gravel - weird smell?

Question:
Does Dennerle crystal quartz gravel smell weird?

I was washing the gravel and when I examined closer, it smells a little weird - can't really describe the smell - but doesn't smell natural

1 ghost shrimp volunteered to help with the test. It was with the gravel inside a big tub since Saturday night.
This morning is still alive.

Any Dennerle crystal quartz gravel users can help?

How to get rid of the smell? Is it harmful to the fishes?

I used Dennerle aquarium gravel for quite a few of my tanks. No problem with, especially when it's new. However, matured gravel with base fertilizer will be different. Especially when water circulation is not good, the 'dead' pockets of gravel wouldn't smell good at all.

Whatever you do, don't bleach the substrate. The color on the gravel will be bleached away and become very faint or whitish color.

I added boiling water to those quartz. Now no more smell hehe
