Decided to take a stroll around bukit panjang with my gf. Some snap shots of butterflies. First 3 pictures are taken by her on the Lumix LX2.

The rest are taken by me on the 100mm macro.

Comments are welcome, ID are more welcome. Thanks! Enjoy the series.

Just a couple of question. When i shoot, the flash should be set to 2nd curtain flash? Why when i upload to photobucket, the quality & colour seems to be poorer?
    Cheers!

Using 2nd curtain or rear sync is quite debatable, although some photographers believe that it will bring out the details. However, I never use it and never encounter any problems with details. You have to test it out in the field

I do not see any quality problems with photobucket, it could be due to the loss of quality when you save the image after editing, however, you might want to apply USM to give it a sharper look. Photobucket does have a max. 200kb limit and normally I have to save it to a lower quality because of it. But since I have another site with no restriction, I haven't been using photobucket.

just an observation, I have looked through some of the image's EXIF data and I find the settings strange, why do you have to shoot at ISO100 for every pic while some having a slow shutterspeed? Try using the 1/focal length ratio for shutterspeed to prevent handshakes, however, it will not apply if you are proning or have a stable support.

All the above shots are done in 2nd curtain but i don't see the difference. I think i will just stick to the normal.

Guess i need to find another site for uploading.

    benetay,
I went to TPTP before and didn't see any butts to shoot, maybe I was too early.
They may be common but sure give you a lot to shoot.

Richard, you can find an article on Toa Payoh park in the link below
    http://butterflycircle.blogspot.com/

Benetay, some of them may be common, although the names of the species doesn't always mean that they are. Having spotted some many species in a single trip isn't common, only certain areas have a variety of species.

Oh yes there are many of them around, don't have to look everywhere for them. Take for example the banded imperial i saw them yesterday and today the same butterfly. What makes it easier will be the leaf that they visit. They keep visiting the same old leaf so all you have to do is wait. Even after being chased away it will come back eventually.

I'm sure you will like a hike moreover you don't have to start too early here. A good time to start will be reaching 1030 at the water area to shoot the drinking butterflies(puddling?) after which head back into the forest to shoot some forest butterflies.

I can only give a general view on this. Still very new to this.

Simon, if i pour salt water in an area does it work to attract male butterflies in the puddling area? How about sugar water?

It was a casual & relaxing walk from 1015am to 5pm

Why buy the lumix lx2 when you have the D3 & 105 VR? P & S camera got limitation.

This place is around bukit panjang, all i can say is be prepared to walk, get stung by mosquito, get bruise by sand, but all in all be prepared to get really wet.

Will bring you guys around the area if possible.

    Cheers!

you will not be happy with the image quality coming off a P&S, when you look closely at 100% resolution or there is a homogenous smooth background. the dirty word is noise!

benetay: Amazing - a stroll can yield so many kinds of butterflies? Which part of Bt Panjang? I hardly see any around my neighbourhood.
