just got my tank a couple of days and ibs syndrome kick in cannot wait for light to come so started substrate and very light planting just to cycle the water first.

Read up on substrates before i commited to one kind and i would say substrate clouding occurs mostly because of the user not so much the product.

started filling water after shaping the sub.

as you can see water has stuff floating but still relatively clear( a bit blur pic sry hands tired after pouring the subs... four bags very heavy lol!)

tray helps to keep water for destroying everything

    after filling

installing the temp lights( doesnt aid growth at all except algea i think lol but light would come in a day or two i hope)

    finished it at 2am... zZZZzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZzzz

water is really not that bad in the first hour and today the water was clear as hell without the usually clouding i hear about after waterfill.

threw in my cherry barbs as official water testers too cause they were in my prison tank anyway for eating my cherry shrimps.... so ironic cherry barb eating cherry shrimps.

Hi bubberls, you got a very huge tank and did you plan your layout of the plants before you purchase any. So big tank and you are planting some hair grass and grosso only. Put in more plants and cycle your tank first before testing your barbs. Keep us update because I might want to get a 4 ft. tank as your. Cheers.

looking for more red plants too cause gonna go for high lighting... love the shadows cast by the fish and leaves....

with such a big space, you need some hardscapes like rocks or driftwoods.
Thats the fun of scaping, when you start ,you just cant stop even its pass midnight.
    Happy scaping !

What soil you using? Thought I read somewhere that we should start with more plants to prevent algae issue. Here is mine...

I'm using ADA and can see that there is no cloudy water at all unlike some claims by some forumer here...

am using ada too but base is ada powersand. i did not plant heavily for last tank and it seems fine as long as i dont dose the npk. when my lights in then i plant heavily... lighting now is only 3 hrs a day.. so i guess the algae does not have a chance to grow. the temp lights are only 36w...

    you have very nice rocks.

    Sorry to bust your bubble.

Uncycled tank with no bb, ADA nutrient rich soil, huge vol of water, handful of plants, lights 3 hours = bba ??.

You will be amazed what time of algae can grow at low light.

Tank this size, you need to already know what plants you need to grow before even filling up with water. Fast growers + slow ones, foreground, mid, back as such. hardscape as well.

Filling up with water first then deciding what you need is usually not ideal. Probably want to stock up on plants soon.

So looking at mine do you think there is any chance of algae? I have added Anubias Nana and E. Tennellus. Hope that lessen the chance of algae.

Thanks bro... You can't imagine how I struggled to put the rocks into the tank cause of the weight I intend to put in a few more smaller pieces so that the tank won't look so bare.

You will easily run into algae issues with such a rich substrate and litte plants.

You will need at least 6-10 times the plant mass from the current pictures. Adding small amounts of plant mass, especially slow growers like Anubias species does nothing to prevent algae.

If you are not planning to do a full planted scape soon, do not turn on the lights. You can improve circulation for your livestock by adding an air pump.

    update of tank week 1

Found the background plant i want for the right side and also got some rocks to improve on the hardscape as there is currently only one driftwood and too much plant might be kinda overkill.

Shrimps doing ok so i guess the water is kinda stable... though cherries are known to be hardy... but i guess compared to fishes they are more sensitive to water conditions.

Full view of the tank in 1st update

    with flash

    without flash

well thats all for now... just have to wait for the HC to fill the lawn in the foreground and for some of the plant to grow thicker to fill the driftwood and background... just realised midground nothing much... or is it enough?

IMO the right corner plant which i know it as 'guppy grass' should shift to background as it can grow very fast and tall.

    Hi Bubberls,

I think you have done well to cycle the tank and plant.

If I were to do different, I would concentrate on fewer species of plants and higher quantity in bigger bunches. Case of collectoritis that we all get but the sooner you get over it the better and your aquascapes will improve.
As it is now, there's too many kinds of bg plants and stem plants, swap some with mid ground plants like short cryptocorynes-C wendtii's/C petchii or easier to manage Anubias. Some mosses can also be used as mid-ground plant eg-Spiky moss.
IMHO one of the more beautiful and easy mosses to keep in our warm weather. [Easier as it can tolerate 28ºC.]

Vallis grows very long and are not suited to tanks ≤2ft tall. Can be longer than 4ft! even for the thinner vallis nana. My own experience I manage to grow it 3.5ft+. Nice for awhile till it started to block everything.

It would also help by putting in a few drops[or many drops! ] of Green Gain to boost rooting and speed up growth in general.
