    pardon my ignorance...how to differentiate dead coral and rock?
    are all these dead coral? thanks

    Yes, those are dead coral. Dead coral has unique shape formed while they were alive. Rocks on the other hand looks like, rocks.

    i notice some of my live rocks do have some dead coral too

    Dont forget though that over time coral skeletons will "turn into" live rock, just not as porous.
    Currently keeping many wild betta species and other anabantoids.

    There are reefers who will dump all these skeletons into sump as bacteria housing and source of calcium and carbonate

    yes, any dead coral or for that matter any rock too can become " live " after sometime in a marine environment....
