    Hi folks,
I'd like to call your attention to some eggs being offered of the above fish
on Aquabid (in the killie eggs listing). It's next to the last entry on the page
and there's a picture of the fish when you open the page. Seller is "Tim" from the UK. Has anyone seen or is keeping this fish?

No, but you guys will play hell outbidding me.

Tim tells me it is for 15+ eggs, BTW.

Apparently they are common in some wild Anabantoid area, but seldom sent to the west.

    Tim said:
The history is that a collecting trip was set up to collect a rare
Anabantoid but these panchax were so common it was difficult to find there
objective. One of the people on this trip knew we wanted killies & caught a
    couple of pairs.

I'm sorry to be so ignorant on killies, but is this A. panchax var. Bangkok very different from the regular ones?

I'll try to find the aquabid entry but appreciate if you post a link
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    Guys,
I saw the nice pink hue on the Aplocheilus and Wright, what grabbed your interest?. Don't suppose this will grow as large as the 'Golden Wonder'.

My Pseudomugil gertrudae breed regularly and I'm eyeing the Pseudomugil tenellus offered by Rarefishatlax. Any idea who he is?

Nonn, any idea if the pinkie Aplo is available in BKK?
I'm back & keeping 'em fingers wet,

Went up too fast for an old retiree, I'll admit. How about finding a source around BK and sending some eggs this way?

My interest was mostly because we have too few really pretty top-minnow-like killies in BAKA and I wanted to get a new one started here.

Actually, I have no business getting them, as I'm coordinator of the KCC ESP Special Initiative for the fishes of Madagascar and Seychelles. I should be saving the space for keeping museum specimens of new species to distribute to the hobby.

You have to admit that they are similar to some of the prettier Pachypanchax species.

An added comment from Tim Addis, if you do find them:
They laid eggs very quickly but they disintegrated in water. I am getting 100% eyed up eggs on peat now.
It is all Bill's (farang9's) fault. He has gotten me into buying too many bassoons so he can't be outbid when something really neat comes along.

My, thats a pretty fish. I will keep my eyes open when I'm in the UK. I bet it is going to be murder bidding on any fish put in the show if they are so pretty.

or Tyrone, could you ask Tim if we can post the nice picture on this thread?
I was sorely tempted to do it anyway, but that's not cricket  Geez,
last night there was just one bidder at $5!

ps Wright, you know you all but stole that Linton!

I've actually asked Tim to join up with the forum so maybe he will post the pic himself and tell us all a bit more about it. Lets wait and see what happens.

    Keep well

Tim's picture is certainly better and more attractive, but take a look at p549 of Baensch Atlas #1 (the 1987 edition in English).

The "Blue Panchax" he shows is not very different from the one everyone is excited about on aquabid. Tim's may be a female, showing more orange, which is the only sex differentiation. The one in Baensch could be a male.

These are an old, rather common killifish, though Tim's picture certainly makes this Bangkok collection look outstanding. The sub-species is probably Aplocheilus panchax siamensis Scheel 1968. They have been around so long, it is possible no one is bothering to keep them any more.

Anyway, I'm glad I quit bidding when I did. I'll wait until Nonn has located a good source. :-)

The caudal fin in Tim's picture....looks quite similar to A. celiae. That was
the first thing that caught my attention, besides the coloration. Wright, I'm sure Nonn can locate these in short order. I will wait for when I'm in Thailand to get these.

Ron, I'd forgotten you have Pseudomugil gertrudae! I'll be contacting you
offline about these, the butterfly rainbow!

There are many many many Aplocheilus panchax in and around Bangkok area. They are one of the most common fish around BUT -a big BUT- , I have not seen anything that good looking before in my life. I e-mailed to Tim for exact location but have not got any reply yet. If he let me know, I will go get them within the next 12 hours!

Normally A. panchax around BKK look very boring like this fish here.

And the one from the south look a little better like this. I can get this strain for you guys if you want to

There is another population in Mahachai area where they get orange finage with black edging, pretty nice also.

    Nonn

After much searching through the Thai papers at http://www.siamensis.org I finally used my head and went to the English translations...

In the 1st article you state that the fish from Mahachai:
After several dip we managed to catch a few Aplocheilus panchax -Orange color morph with black edging unpaired fin, simply striking!
I suspect these are the fish Tim has. A group of Brits were collecting in Thailand 2 years back and they may of gone past the cite or actualy collected there... who knows. But those are probably the fish in question. Do you have a pic of them?

    ciao

    Hello all

Here we have some more evidence:
    http://www.siamensis.org/survey/s037e.asp

If I recall correctly Tim is good buddies with David Armitage. Interestingly Tony Pinto was along for the ride... maybe he will tell us more. I think he is a member of the forum but I will drop him an email to get his attention.

Nonn, I agree with Tyrone. Tim mentioned that he and others caught this species during an anabantoid collection trip just outside Bangkok. I believe the group was looking for Betta sp. "Mahachai" and happened to catch the Aplocheilus along with it. You have pictures of the panchax from the Mahachai swamp?
    Fish.. Simply Irresistable
    Back to Killies... slowly.
