That's the best way as far as I know. Cut away all brown leaves and also dead stems. Don't worry. If there are still stems left, new leaves will grow. And yes, it's contagious.Originally Posted by carlfsk

Java fern likes good circulation and cool water. Browning is highly likely if the temperatures 30C or above. If you have high light and CO2, corresponding fertilisation is needed to avoid distorted growth. Otherwise, they do well in low light, no-CO2 setups.

I am using 2 FL tube of 30watt each, with a chiller to maintain the temperature between 27C to 28C. Good circulation, of course. Using 2 canister for a 4ft standard size tank. No co2 injection.
The ferns are bubblings.
Wonder what's wrong that cause the browning...

In my experience Microsorum and Bolbitis (expecially Bolbitis) are extremely sensible to high bioload in the water.
These are the first questions that come to my mind thinking about your problem:
How big is your tank and how many fishes (and what type) are inside it?
What is the frequency and amount of water changes?
Please check the following parameters:
Ammonia
Nitrates
Phosphates
Regards.

imo, patches of brown color on microsorums are not always show a problem - could u show some pics ? with good pics and water parameters i asume i can decide what (and if) something is wrong
