Hi everyone , i'm actually new to marine fishes and regarding the setting up of the tank . But i intending to setup an one feet cube tank for a start before i try larger tanks ... currently i've add sea salt ( bought from LFS ) into the tank , calculated volume is 20 litres with 700 grams of sea salt as stated on the packet of the sea salt ... i've also use a sponge filter to cycle the water ( still not sure how long should i cycle but its been 2 days ) will be introducing an external cooling fan to bring down slight tempreture as well ... last but not least , i'll use a cilping bulb for lighting to make the tank look nice ... actually , i'm only intending to keep a small amount fishes , only like 2 - 4 drawf lionfish and a coral in the middle as decoration ... Can anyone give me more advice on what else i need or what cannot be done as i do not want to end up killing all this lovely lionfishes ... Thanks in advance for all you guys help ...

Re: New to marine tank ( HELP )

for fishes only, you must at least cycle the tank for 1 month before introuducing any fishes, there's no fishes and there's no need to on the fan as it will only fasten the water evaporation rate, from what you mentioned above, you have alot alot alot to read up (i mean alot) before you start into the marine hobby.

can google information for "cycling marine tank" and you wil have more info.

    all the best

really thanks alot for infomations there ... i've tried reading up everywhere but most infomations are kind of general so i really do not know which one to apply on my one feet tank , thats why i need people like you to feed me with more infomations ... may i ask if i need to cycle the tank for one month , water will tend to evaporate , so what is the best way to top up the water as it need the salt level to balance ... once again , i'm really gradeful for the infomations back there ...

You could top up with ro/di ( reverse osmosis/ distilled ) water. Do not use tap water for your top up.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

Re: New to marine tank ( HELP )

There is no way in a million years you can keep a dwarf lion fish in such a small tank, nevermind 2-4!!!
Filtration is totally inadiquate. A sponge filter does nothing in a saltwater tank, you're MUCH better off having NO filter and just a powerhead or two, and live rock. Live rock is the best fitlration available for marine tanks.
Keeping those fish, in that tank, is cruelty.
Aslo, 4 weeks for fish is not true. If you use live rock, already cured, cycle can be as little as 2 weeks, sometimes even 'instant'.

Re: New to marine tank ( HELP )

Hate to break this to you, but you should not try anything smaller than a 70 - 80 litre tank as your first tank.

A cube that small is going to be insanely difficult if not impossible to maintain stably, with any livestock in it.

You need to do more research on marine tanks before you proceed any further, for the sake of your fish and your sanity.

This is a partial list of fish you can keep comfortably in a tank of 70 - 100 litres, and even then having 4 or 5 is probably the responsible limit to a tank of this size.

Re: New to marine tank ( HELP )

Really thanks alot for all the people up there for your comments ... OMG , i didn't know that a 1ft tank cannot worked out but i guess i've seen people talking about small coral tank but how they manage to make it ? Or something like nano tank , what is a nano tank actually ?

    Fuzzy : reagarding 70 - 80 litres tank , i actually don't quite know how to tell the litres , can a 2ft x 1ft x 1ft acrylic tank work out ?

Mez : I have seen the articles regarding using live rocks as the water needs ammonia and nitrate if i'm not wrong , but may i ask where can i find this kind of live rocks ? Are they cheap ? I've tried looking up @ the buy / sell topic but i cant find any ...

Once again , really sorry for the ignorance here and really thanks for all the infomations fed to me ... I'm really new to this marine thing but somehow got hook when i see how fierce and colourful they are ...

    Cheers ~~

Re: New to marine tank ( HELP )

    A nano tank is generally a tank between 6 - 30 gallons.

The smallest beginner nano tank you should try is a 24 gallon, and even then you probably want something like the Boyu or JBJ Nano tanks, with built in overflow etc.

A 2 foot tank is still considered a nano marine tank.

Live rock sells for about $7 a kilogram, all the marine aquarium stores will carry. The minimum amount of live rock that is recommended in a marine tank is around 120 grams of live rock per litre of water.

For more info you can google for "nano tank setup" and check out the forums that turn up. Or better, head down to the library or Borders and pick up a book or three on Marine Aquariums.

Top right hand corner. Aquarium calculator.

Just enter the measurements, Length x Breadth x Height and voila, capacity.

Woah, $7 SGP for live rock per kilo? Here its £12 a kilo for the good stuff, about $26 SGP per kilo.
A tank that size would be considered a 'pico tank'. IMO for experienced hobbyists only.

SGD$7.00 per Kg is for the normal stuff, minimal coralline few bonuses, but usually cured.

The premium stuff is probably SGD$15.00 - $20.00 per Kg, occasionally get mushrooms, tubeworms and various tag alongs, but the premium grade live rock is not always available.

Re: New to marine tank ( HELP )

getting 2nd hand rocks from reefers is usually a better idea, as it will already be cured and contains beneficial bacterias.. its cheaper as well..

live rocks are very crucial in a marine tank, helps to stabilise ur tank..

bro, try www.sgreefclub.com. Its also in the links contained in the sticky at the top of this forum.

You can usually get free live rock also if you're patient.

This thread interests me a lot seeing as though most of the talk on AQ is freshwater, ive never seen any photos of marine shops. If you do go and the owner is OK with it, please take some photos to share..

I'll see what I can do, just for you!

If you haven't yet you should go check out that site too Mez, thats where most of the saltier side of Singapore usually crawls.

I'll have to warn you that this may tempt you to schedule a trip down here at some point in the near future as you see the prices and selection available locally though

Acrylic tank will be easily scratched when you try to run an algae magnet cleaner on it. Get a glass tank instead and a good size to begin with is a 2x2x2 cube braceless but I would get one where the height is less than 2 feet for easier maintenance. Do a proper setup with a cabinet and sump if you are thinking of long term else it will just be a waste of money.
