Hi Marle, thanks for the tip. However, I am worried about wearing down the female with such consecutive broods.
Hi guys,
Sharing something i learnt while keeping these cute creatures. This method can only be used once your Apisto pair get their first spawn. Tried and tested with A.Diplotaenia & A.Breitbinden.
When the fishes start spawning, normally the fries start to be free swimming after an approximate of 9 days. The mother will then start bringing the fries to travel around. During this period, the female will be ultra defensive but its also during this period whereby you must execute the step.
Remove all the fries or both the parents to another tank (In my case, as my tank is 2 feet, i partition them into 3 and the partitions are black, not transparent nor translucent. The parents must not be able to see the fries.) After which, you can see a huge disappointment in the female especially and she will be frantically looking for her fries high and low. However, reality sets in and she will be her yellow coat even after one to three days. The female will start building their cave and then spawn again. The quickest time possible for me was 14days when i can see another free swimming spawn. Subtracting about 9 days, meant the female laid her eggs around the 5th day after her fries were taken away.
Anyone with spawning tricks please share here too! Oh, i realize feeding frozen bloodworms give a huger spawn!
Cheers! And Happy Spawning!

You might be right, and i have not kept them long enough to see any repercussion.
Currently the Breitbinden pair has done it for 5 times consecutively and my ex-diplotaenia pair gave me 2 spawn in a month.
For the Breitbinden, so far so good, in fact i will say they still look great and their finnages are more colourful and extended! For the diplotaenias, i sold them already.

nice advise.
but i feel that feeding live tubifex worms gives a even bigger spawn as compared to frozen bloodworms
great advice! Never tried that before as i am afraid of the diseases it might carry. But like what dexter said, washing them clean will be the solution!
I am also quite against the usage of only air sponge filter. I personally feel that a simple hang over filter will do a better job for the enhanced survival and upkeep of fries.

I do not prefer just sponge filter too. You would like to drink and swim in clean water too right? So over filtration is the key to longevity for these fishes... My 2ft tank used to run on an OHF powered by an internal filter (not powerhead). A sponge filter, a box filter that i replace the media with ceramic rings and biohome. And an Eden501 running a UV unit. So do you treasure your apisto as much as i do?
Wait till you here my filtration for my L46.. hehehe

fully agree! actually part of the fun in keeping fishes is the filtration set up too...you will feel satisfied when you see your tank clean and parameters at its optimum for your fishes. Sometimes setting up complex system for my tank helps alot in boosting my interest in keeping fishes/shrimps.
