At 3-4 times total volume per hour, the 2213 looks adequate but after browsing through the related threads and posts, a 2224 seems better for the job. And i will be looking at changing to a 160l maybe in 12 months time.

i'm still undecided, any suggestion guys?

It depends on what you connect to your filter. Is it connect to any pre-filter or chiller? In theory you are correct. A 2213 has a flow of 400l/hr. Usually if you add in filter media or if you intend to connect to a chiller or internal reactor, try to size 1 size higher. You might want to think about 2215 if you are keen on a 160l tank. Alternatively you can also consider 2213 then add another 2213 if you change to a 160l tank.

Was also looking at the 2215 but dont feel good with its power consumption and the lack of a media basket. You think the 2224 will be an overkill?

2224 is ok. There is no right or wrong. For 2224, the flow can be adjusted according to the Eheim website.

    My thoughts: -

    1) 2224 flow higher than 2215
    2) 2215 is more reliable and durable according to some people. No experimental data to prove.
    3) 2215 has a larger filter media capacity which is something I like personally.
    4) 2224 power comsumption is almost 1/2 of 2215 but if the monthly bill is $20, it does not make huge savings in my opinion
    5) As for pricing, I guess the price will be the same if you add in the double tap for 2215.

I do not think no filter basket is an issue as you can buy those filter bags which are relatively cheap

Thanks William. Double tap is definately useful for controling flow and during maintainance. let me check the price difference of 2215 & 2224.

bro, you can also consider ecco pro series. the 2234 runs at 600lph on 5W of power only, and comes with 2 media baskets filled with eheim original media (mech pro and substrat pro). it also comes with double taps for easy filter cleaning and maintenance. should be cheaper than the pro series though more expensive than classic.

fyi the price of a 2234 (with media) is about the same price as a 2217 (without media) at one LFS i checked. i opted for the 2234 because of its low power consumption, ready media and double taps.
