hi everyone i'm new and found this forum when i was looking for apisto's
this looks like a nice forum so i registered

    here is my problem,
i got a couple of apisto's at the lfs. they looked like a young male and female but when i got home they looked the same wich is yellow
    i am still not sure
are this two females, or 1 young male and 1 female?
also, they are agassizi? just to be sure
i know agassizi is a harem fish but i wasnt sure about the sexe so i will add a male or female later
they need a little bit of good food but they are active and healthy. the first one flares at the second one sometimes

    fish1

    flaring to it's own reflection

fish2 (this one should be male?)

i hope the pics are good enough!!
    thanks!

Hello Stefania, welcome to AQ. I would say that you have 2 x agassizii females.

The males have longer dorsal, anal and ventral fins, and have more blue markings in the facial area, especially on the cheeks. Males are more iridescent on the sides as well.

By the way, the first female is showing it's brooding colors. If you find a male soon, it will probably breed, if you conditioned it well.

Welcome to AQ. Glad that you find the apisto scene in the forum useful. The rounded tail is a sign of them being females too. Also, those are some nice pictures taken. Especially the first picture.

Not too bad, I had to take so much more before something acceptable comes out...

Also is there any difference between fire and flame red agassizi? I am going to get the FIRE red from a man named David Soares in a month, but i want to know if there is a differnce in looks.

Re: are these Apistogramma agassizi females?

No idea on the difference nicos, but it's probably just something to do with the difference in intensity of red on the body. There are several tank-bred forms of the agassizii, so fire and flame red might be the same fish. Different breeders occasionally have different ways of "calling" their strains, when it can just be the same thing all along.

Thanks stormhawk, but someone told me one has fire has more gold on the body and flame has mors blue on tail. Whatever I like either way. I have seen varied pics aswell but same names. Thanks alot.
